I need encouragement and some good advise

I'm glad you put this thread up because i have been thinking about doing this too. I thought when i would mentioned this to dh he would flip but he agreed. I have someone to butcher the birds for 1.50 each but i think i could do this myself and save the money. A girlfriend at work who raises chickens kills her own and is going to show me how when she does some birds in june. This year i have been very health concious. I remember last year when my friend gave us some free ranged broilers(processed) they were so much better than the walmart chicken i usually buy. Even with the cost of feed it will be cheaper doing it myself. I at least will be able to control what my birds eat, no antibiotics ect. I plan to buy some birds in july so they can processed and in the freezer by fall. I plan on buying 100 birds, i have an old barn we don't use. It's just used for some garden equipment and our tractor. What hatchery has the best birds?

i know on the other board, there are alot of people that hatch their own meatbirds. you might want to try posting on this site to see if there are those that hatch meatbirds that can sell you the chicks. it's nice to know where the chicks are coming from.

I read a book (could have been Storey's Guide) that had excellent directions on butchering the chickens rather than plucking...of course, now that I want to help you out, I cant find the book....

Check Storey's and I will look for the book. I found a farm to butcher through the woman I bought my Roos from....she has a mid sized flock and sells the eggs
