I had two big Rouen ducks that I raised for six months, unexpectedly one passed. So I bought four new ducklings and started to raise them, slowly one by one they were dead unexpectedly as well now I only have one duckling and one duck left. What am I doing wrong? I keep them with my chickens but they're mainly free ranged (Except the chicks and ducklings are caged in till they can fend for themselves) I feel horrible ): I just want more ducks but I feel as though I'm doing something wrong. Haven't lost one chick.

I am sorry about your losses.
What are you feeding them? it may have been too low in niacin if it was not duck food. Did you make sure the area you had the ducklings was clean? no disease from the dead duck? Did they have enough warmth, water and food? did the one that died eat something it shouldn't have?

I lost one of my Pekin ducklings out of the blue as well.... I'm interested to hear what people have to say about this. She was fine in the morning and dead in the evening! Her sister has grown up to be perfectly healthy so it's still a complete mystery to me.

Yeah the two I had were sisters and one is perfectly healthy! I feel them duck food, and I clean their bedding and water feeders everyday because I they're messy and it bothers me. I don't know what I am doing wrong, should I sanitize the area?

Please give us details about how you work with the ducks.

What do you use for cleaning?

What space are they in? House? Barn? Shed?

What feed are you giving them? Supplements?

What kind of waterer?

What kind of swimming if any?

Are they on lawn, garden, woods, pond?

Other animals in the area, domestic and wild?

Temperatures and rainfall lately?

Some if not all states have program through their agricultural colleges to do necropsies to determine cause of death. I suggest you get one done.

Has there been construction debris in the area they are kept?

First, I am very sorry for the loss of your feathered friends. It is very hard to lose one and not have an obvious reason why it happened: It can be downright scary.

You need to start carefully looking at everything from their food to their housing. You may find the answer through process of elimination. Take away the first suspicious thing, wait, then try another if you are still having issues.

What are they sleeping on bedding wise? Waterfowl seem to be much more sensitive to environmental toxins than chickens.

I have gotten a moldy bale of straw for bedding: It looked and smelled fine, but I use gloves so didn't feel the powdery stuff on it. I used it as bedding in my goose house and chickens nesting boxes. Within 48 hours I had two dead geese and a third sick one. It was when I changed the straw in the hospital cage to some of the good horse hay that the third goose almost immediately began to improve. The light bulb went on and I checked the straw and found the mold. I cleaned it all out of all the housing, then thoroughly cleaned all the houses, bleached the floors, and put in the horse hay: No more issues.

Because they love to dig with their bills, is their any chance they came upon food that had been on the floor and become buried and spoiled?

Are they allowed to free range during the day? If so, are their any plants the ducks seem to be eating that the chickens don't bother with?

Good luck and I hope you find the cause very soon.
