I Need Help Now!! Update Pg 2

Thanks so much for all your help. I've got chicken vits with electrolytes and I've got save a chick. Which would be better to use in her water? I got rid of the antibiotics. She only got what I gave her in the tip of the dropper. I already did some olive oil mixed with yogurt. Can I keep with the yogurt mix or should I go with straight olive oil? I will do some more olive oil and massage before bed. How many times per day would you recommend?

I wonder... Just to get the olive oil in safely, why not try putting it in some soft canned cat or baby food. See what interests her and then add the oil. Oil can be bad if they aspirate with it and they won't aspirate if it has flavor (and you're not forcing it) so probably not a good idea to do it directly. Maybe you can cook some carrot and mash it with the oil. I bet she'd like that. Don't know what to think about the yogurt but maybe mix some of the yogurt in with the carrot mixture. They say plain yogurt here but I always use what I have on hand (maybe it's the sugar in the fruited yogurt that is of concern). You can add a little supplement into the mixture. Probably the vits and electrolytes in the water to start with. Maybe add a pinch or two of cherry jello powder or just a touch of gatorade to make her want to drink it. They like 'tasties' in their water.

I mixed it with plain yogurt and she sort of syphoned it off of my fingers. So, I think that all is well there. I will keep sending updates. Thanks again for all the help...these feathered kids really keep me hopping!!!

Update....

This morning, her crop is definitely more empty and more pliable. I gave more yogurt mixed with olive oil and massaged the crop. She is still going to the bathroom normally. I just can't figure out what she could have in her crop that's causing this problem. Should I continue to fast or can I start adding a small amount of food? It's been 24 hours. She is a big chicken so she is not in a position to starve. I just want to do what's best. She is definitely depressed. Baby food? Vegies, meat?

She just seems to not want to eat anything. I have to put the yogurt mixture on her beak and let her lick it off. I'm really worried.

On a bright note, her eyes are bright and responsive...she will get up and walk around. Color is still great. She does appear more weak than yesterday. Any ideas? Just keep going with the olive oil?

Thanks for the help!

Update....5PM...9-23-11

Still not a happy chicken. Doesn't want to eat anything. Her crop is down. Although it still feels like she has something the consistency of bubble gum in there. However, I can feel her neck through this. Is this how a normal empty crop feels? When can I start feeding her? She has eaten some watermelon and I've given her some baby food veggies with olive oil. I would love to give her a couple meal worms but don't want to upset this delicate balance. Do chickens ever get bacterial infections in their crop? After the Sulmet, she appeared to empty her crop much quicker and it wasn't as hard.

Anyone?

I have been dealing with this with a roo for the last two days too. His crop has gotten much smaller now. But he refuses to eat on his own. He will eat it off my finger though. He was very thin so I felt it was necassary to continue to feed him soft foods because i was afraid he would die of malnutrition. This is what I fed him/am feeding him. I cut back to oil water and electrolytes at first, then added some scrambled eggs softened with yoghurt. I also added a little sugar because he was so small, but your hen sounds ok there.

Thanks. Yes, she is a pretty hefty pullet, thank goodness! I think I will try some egg and see if she will eat that. At this point, I just want to get something into her. I have no idea what could be in there that feels like bubble gum! I guess I will keep up with the olive oil and massage and slowly add food back in. She loved starter feed mixed with yogurt. Do you think that would hurt her at this point?

I don't know what happened but her comb and wattles are turning purple and she is breathing very, very heavily!!!!! I haven't done anything different. Put a small amount of baby food on her beak, not in her beak. She tried to eat a meal worm and failed. PLEASE HELP!!!!!

When my chicken had a purple crown it was an infection. She needed antibiotic. I took a stool sample to the vet and he gave the appropriate antibiotic based on the bacteria that he saw from her stool. Do you have a vet for your other pets that you could call?
Nystatin is a good one for sour crop. Good luck.
