I recently purchased a pekin duck, hes about a week old. Hes my first duck, but ive done all my research so i think im doing a pretty good job in raising him. Im just a bit worried because hes the only duck i have, and ive read that ducks are happier when they can befriend other ducks. Im just wondering, is it possible that he will be unhappy as an only duck? I spend plenty of time with him, but i worry that human companionship isnt enough.
    Thanks :)

Ducks really are much happier with at least one duck buddy. They can be very bonded to their humans, but we still can't give them what a duck friend can. We can't be there with them 24-7, but another duck CAN and they really will be much happier with a friend. I would recommend getting at least one more duck (two is better if you have the space, in case something happens to one of them along the way you won't be left with a lone duck again).

As lovely as it is to have a duck bond with you.. it's impossible to constantly be with the duck and therefore it will get very upset and stressed when you leave.
It would be a good idea to get a little friend :)

Definitely get another duck. I once had a broody duck who left the nest after the first several hatched. There were still 4 eggs unhatched, so I gave them to 4 friends to raise. Each of those single ducks turned into a problem child when they reached maturity. The males were downright aggressive to people, chasing and biting, even those who raised them. The females were just obnoxious, always underfoot, pulling shoe laces, coming in the house or car, and just made a general niucance of themselves. ducks need other ducks to be happy!

A lone male duck will most likely get especially aggressive to humans once fully mature.
