I need rooster 101

Dont stress over it,they will settle things. My Cochin bantams are being added and the pecking order is just everywhere, the lead hen runs from them for some reason i do not know of,she will get her spot back, everyone is unsure of who leads what now.
Thanks for the encouragement. :)

If you get hens from somebody becareful, you will need to do bio security and make sure they have no diseases or parasites,it might be best to just hold off instead of risking death or disease to your flock.

Yeah I hear yah I don't normally bring adults into my flock other then these roosters, which we quarantined. If we get hens I'll be very picky about where they come from and we'd quarantine them the same as the roosters. It wouldn't give the roos more ladies right away but it would give them more sooner the our chicks mature. you think I should just wait the two or so months for my babies to finish growing? They are about 8-9 weeks old now.

If the roosters are really over-mating that bad then you may wanna try hen saddles, but If it isn't severe I would just wait these next few months, better thne getting your chickens sick with something.

I survived probably a year with 3 roos and one hen. My situation was maybe a little different because none of the roos would let the other roos mate with the hen. When I finally got chicks and they became pullets, it was really fun to watch the roos watch with amazement at what they were seeing in the pullet pen. They couldn't believe their eyes. They would visit, then go off, come back, and on and on. Eventually, the hen decided to move into the pullets' coop and brought along a boy friend or two. Now they're all living happily ever after. 7-8 weeks (for you) is really not that long to wait. They really could all get together before the girls are fully grown.

Ill hold off then, I have 7 8-9 week old pullets that range with the flock. the roos are so good with them and in a few months they will be mature enough it'll make those boys happy.

Hi, I think your idea to rehome the rapist rooster was best. Though the strongest hens defend themselves, the weaker hens will take even more abuse. I'm worried about your innocent young pullets being subjected to that as soon as they're free range.

Chickens learn from each other and the bad rooster chooses not to practice the good behavior he sees in his brother. So he's made his choice. I agree you should retire him to a rooster farm and get a better one if you want two for protection. So many people are rehoming sweet gentle roosters. I once gave a sweet little bantam mix to a farmer with an old rooster with lots of hens and they integrated perfectly together. He was a perfect gentleman and he was the submissive rooster. His bigger half brother was polite also.

Growing up on a farm with over 30 hens and one to two roosters at a time, we rarely had agressive rapist roosters even when they were young. When we got one he was butchered. My parents didn't tolerate that behavior since it stressed the hens. And them.

There are good and bad roosters just like there are good and bad people. As chicken gods I think the humans should protect the weaker hens who are being abused. :)

Also there are great chicken people out there if you want to buy hens, maybe even someone from BYC is close to you. I think your quarantine time is a great idea. :)
