I need some comfort from the BYC family...

Don't blame yourself. You loved your hens and we all know that you wouldn't do anything to hurt them.
Everyone leaves sometime. I lost a hen to mistakes as well. I learned that it would have happened sometime. (She never did well with the heat).
Cry if you need to, you will feel better. At least you know about the heat lamps.

No so far we have not been as cold as last winter, you found her on the nest. She may have got eggbound ,it happen this time of year. Plus small bantam hens, that will happen. They should do fine inside of a coop. Dont think you did anything wrong.

It's not your fault Brad. Trust me on this one. I had a perfectly healthy girl die on my one night. Completely unexpected, and a totally inexplicable death. Fine on a Wednesday evening when I put them to bed, and by Thursday morning, she was gone. And this was in the mild part of spring and a full grown, full sized bird. No extenuating circumstances.

Your little girl was small, and battling extremely harsh weather conditions. It's not your fault. Sometimes these things just happen.

So please, don't beat yourself up about it. It just goes to show, when it's time to go, it's time to go. And nothing anyone tries to do about it will change that.

Having said that, I am glad to hear that you've put up a heat lamp. At least it pretty much reduces the chances that you might lose another bird to the cold.

It is hard everytime you loose a pet. But you do the best you can and thats all you can do.
Sometimes things don't go the way you want and you have to make the best of it.

Just trying to 'revive' your pet still says allot about yourself. You are very caring and loving and thats all that matters.

I don't know if it was laying problems that caused her death. She was a little more than a year old and I didn't feel anything inside her. This hen had a habit of sleeping in the nest boxes once she started her molt this fall, so I figured I would let her so she would say warm.

I am so sorry, it was not your fault, it is a nature to do things like this weather we like it or not.
It sounds you gave her a great life, and she loves you for that.
