I wasn't planning on using poison, we also have cats. We put water in the buckets, but I was thinking we'd probably need a larger one too. I don't know if there's any place near us with dry ice. Though I can pick some of that up in town. Just curious, how does that kill them?

The gas coming off of it as it evaporates. Carbon dioxide? It fills the tunnels (is why you want to block all you can find) and they can't breath.

Sadly rats are way, way smarter than mice. Much harder to trap or kill.

There is definitely a wide range of suggestions! Still a little bit of trial and error involved. Good info for getting started.

Cats are great for above-ground rodents but for tunneling type rodents dog ratters sniff & dig them out & chase the rodents down. I'm curious too about dry ice...

I'm having success with cat treats as snap trap bait at the moment. Either the ones that come as a stick, smooshed up a bit so it's more pastey, or the stuff that's already a paste.

Yep, sounds like meaty or cheesy greasy stuff works for rats ~ either its the protein or strong smell that attracts them?!

I tried to find the Mink Man equivalent in NJ but couldn’t find anyone.

Pest companies aren't any better than figuring what works for ourselves first. Just $$$ down the drain IMO. OK for some but not for us ~ maybe ok for termites but not for anything like rats or predators around chickens.

The Mink Man idea is great but I don't know of any out here either.
