Yep, sounds like meaty or cheesy greasy stuff works for rats ~ either its the protein or strong smell that attracts them?!
Probably some combination of the two. Even wetting chicken feed just enough to make a thick paste works quite well since they already have a taste for it.

Leah

Wee Leah passed away today, I just couldn’t get calories into her, I might do a check of the crop to see if there are any visible signs of blockage. But I do feel there was more going on with her.

Petra is on her own now and a bit lost. Hopefully she will make some friends with the silkie chicks.
So very sorry, she was a beauty and you did your best for her. Fly high, dear Leah!

I wasn't planning on using poison, we also have cats. We put water in the buckets, but I was thinking we'd probably need a larger one too. I don't know if there's any place near us with dry ice. Though I can pick some of that up in town. Just curious, how does that kill them?
CO2 is the gas that releases as it melts. The CO2 is heavier than the air and it displaces the oxygen in the tunnels which puts them to sleep and then kills them.

As long as you can find and block off all their entrances and exits it should work well and the good thing is it will get the whole nest at one time.

It can be hard to find now though I had to drive 2 hrs away to get it. It used to be way more available.

I read a lot about it when I had to put Rue (an injured chicken) down. It’s the method we chose and it was peaceful, she just went to sleep.

Thank you! Sorry about your hen. But it sounds like such a good way to give them a gentle end.
