I need to vent about Girl Scouts

We gave up on the GS because of that, and the threats we were getting for "not getting involved enough" a in the sales!

Girlscouts USED to be about learning, socializing and merit badges, then ONCE A YEAR selling cookies...

Now it's cookies, popcorn, calendars, candy and candles-- 5 sales a year! People in this community are unemployed, self employed, or work 2 minimum wage jobs to make ends meet--
they just can't afford to buy--
and you get sick of asking and feel guilty when you do!

And when I saw the corporate building-- it made me sick to know they were getting all their money off the labors of these little girls-- who see so little from their efforts!

I am trying to teach my kids there is more to life than money, and material things... AND that they can be more than a door to door salesman... Scouts is no longer helping us in that area... so we quit.

We are trying to get our own "scouts" of sorts together that doesn't involve sales... but the school and the parents don't want anything to do with it because it isn't "Scouts"... so we're done.

Hmmm sounds like teaching to me,,, parents who pick up their kids late, we can't take them home, it would be setting ourselves up for an abuse charge. But the parents get hysterical if they WANT to see you and you are with someone else. I also was a Scout leader, Cubs, and Boy Scouts,, I told the parents they could be on time or not show up at all, don't get mad if you have to wait for me, I've been held up by someone else, blame them, don't get in my face or you are not welcome here. We had the least trouble of all the Troops.

I took my daughter to ONE meeting years ago,all the lady did was nag at the girls and made it no fun....

I admit I can't wait until next year when I can start a troop for my daughter. I'm not looking forward to the politics and lack of support but I am looking forward to organizing a fun time. Hopefully there are a lot of fun girls who are interested.

Hey, I'm an optimist.

I have done t-ball, machine pitch, baseball, Cub scouts, Boy scouts and several times never had a kid of my own in it. Kids are great...parents are horrible. The worst was one that took off with the popcorn money her son sold...like $800...he was the top seller and was looking at several awards and such...What do you tell a kid?

Well I do love Girl Scouts and have fun with the girls, and it's not the girls or the Girl Scout council I am upset with, it's the parents. They want so much but they don't want to help at all. I don't know if I will quit because I love the girls and if I quit they will probably not get another leader. I went the the office today and explained what I was dealing with and they were not even shocked. They said they deal with this stuff all the time.

Thanks for all the support everyone, I am glad it's not just me that thinks sometimes parents are impossible to deal with.

That is why now the girl scout office makes you list your social security numbers and sign your life away just to pick up the cookies your daughter sales.

Jr All American football was THE most fun I ever had with my son and the parents on his team. Every other sport and team sucked. This one was awesome! Everyone got along. And they never won a single game all season.
