I never knew.....

I'm glad you're so happy!

Mine are only about 1 1/2 weeks old and I'm still a nervous chick mom. I can tell they're comfortable but I feel so.....responsible. These are my first chickens.

In time I hope to come back to this thread as happy as you are!

I'm having a blast with mine as well. Ive had chickens for about 10 years. Its been about 20 without. I now have a nice little Texas flock. I love watching them. I put mine outside at 2 weeks old in a brand new coop and run. The wife and I set up a little setting area as soon as we did. They are 9 weeks old now and we spend almost all of our idle time setting and watching the birds. This is now our favorite spot on the property.

What a beautiful spot that is to sit and relax, and of course, watch the chickens!

You will soon enough. When we brought home the chicks, I spent the first four nights sleeping on the couch getting up multiple times to check on them. After awhile, we relaxed more and it became a real pleasure to have them!

Our chicks are currently 12-13 weeks old. We started with 10 straight-run mix of barred rock, red star, and rhode islands...and the understanding that we only wanted hens. Within 3 weeks we knew that 2 of the RIR were roos. Then about 2 weeks ago (at age 11wks) one of the rocks crowed....he was dinner this past weekend! So now we have 9 and we know 3 are hens, 2 are roos, and the rest are undetermined!

The buggers are a lot of fun. We too have a seating area in front of the run/coop. We have a milk crate that gets brought in for sitting...and brought out of course!

Our fluffy-butts are now at an age where the hens are starting to sit for us and moving golf balls around in the nest boxes. I think we still have a ways to go before the egg collection begins, but I know that Red Stars lay early

Strange thing for us, compared to some others, is that we haven't named any yet. Well...except for Blinky...he was dinner recently and got his name while dying.

LOL

We have named all of ours. We allowed our children to name a good many of our birds because they are responsible for their birds. One thing I've noticed since acquiring our birds is that having the responsibility of caring for their chickens has really shown my kids responsibility. I have watched my children grow and learn so much just by having chickens. My oldest has used the chickens to learn multiplication and addition. We've even been doing some science when incubating the eggs. This has been a wonderful learning experience for the entire family, and we look forward to much more learning to come :)

My teens love them too, my daughter goes out after school and reads in the coop while they perch all over her. She quit reading school books in there when she had a 'poop incident' on one of the books that made a little mess lol.
