I pulled off what I think is poop and made my week old chick bleed.

I thought it might be the same spot as well. In which case you just leave it alone. Poop looks like POOP. Only pull off dried on poop, and poop should come off under 5 minutes of warm water. I hope it wasn't this spot...too easy to get infected.

Umm well I am thinking that's what it was! I am starting to panic. Even though they might not like it maybe I should put neosporin all their bottoms! Is there any other thing I should do to keep them from infection?

Could it be the dried umbilical cord? I noticed that on one of my chicks too, but the vent was clean and "winking" like it should be. Other chicks sometimes pick it off. I check all the chicks for pasty butt numerous times a day when I hold them, and have applied olive oil to their clean vents anyway. I'm a neurotic new chick mommy.

Don't panic. It will be OK. Neosporin is fine, with any of the anti-biotic ointments, just make sure it does not have any of the "caine" type pain relievers, like benzocaine or lidocaine. They can be toxic to birds. I think neosporin is ok, it has a different kind of pain reliever, but check the label.
I would not use peroxide or alcohol, both can damage healthy tissue.
If you can see the vent, then you know it is not blocked. As said before, warm water should soften it up. If you cannot soak it off gently; trimming the fluff is possible.

Good luck,

I found the chick and applied neosporin. Sadly, I am pretty sure it was the dried umbilical cord I wish I would have figured out how to use this website out before I did that. But what's done is done. Thanks for all your help! Is their any tips on what to look for it it gets infected? Will it puss? Should I keep an eye on if its still drinking & eating? Anything else?

I am an adult. I have cleaned many a chick's butt when poop collected or stuck to its vent or the fluff beneath it. I once mistook an umbilical for dried feces, so I know the seriousness of the question and the concern of the OP and responding members.

But I just started giggling about the "winking" vent.

I am so sorry! You would not know I am over 50 years old, now, wouldja??

Neosporin, without any of the pain relievers (ending with "-caine"), will be fine for the wound.

I think you got it covered. Watch for the other chicks pecking at it. Seperate if necessary.
Since the cord was already dried, I don't think it is a big problem.
