There is a hierarchy of value. I would rank a prize bull, dog or horse above a chicken, rat or cricket. An elephant is more valuable on every level than a cockroach. An indigo bunting trumps an English sparrow. Stephen Hawking's life is worth more than Charles Manson's.

I obviously like chickens, too, but let's take a bite of the reality sandwich: They're mobile lawn ornaments with brains the size of peanuts.

lol I just noticed the code for funny post is...yuck yuck...lol

My dad ate dog meat once..it wasnt on purpose.. He was in traveling to asia for business and here comes a guy offering samples of candy, food etc and there was a long line for it. He went and got the meat dish......later he asked the waiter what the meat was and they said dog meat. My father could barely stand up and was about to pass out lol. Funny thing was when he got home, his dogs ignored him!! I wonder if they knew....

since i dont have a horse, a prize bull, or a dog ,,, my chickens are 1 step down on the hierarchy ladder then my kids,, ,,, PEOPLE put "values" on animals, by OUR personal standards,, where in any animal study or scientific paper do we find out where each animal belongs in this "hierarchy standard?

I know people considor madagascar cockroaches as loving pets or any other exotic bug you find in a petshop. People have different opinions. All my animals (even my scorpion) are my babies. Even after I have kids they will always be part of my life.

yep those are the ones. To me a chicken is no different then a parrot or any other avian creature. to be hoenst its just like discremination. Why should it mater that its just a chicken. The have rights like every other animal. They get treats like my cat or my dog. They play like other animals. same thing goes for geese, ducks or other fowl. Heck for halloween I am going to dress up as a pirate and put my chicken on ym shoulder

Ok folks, for the reecord again, I don't condone marauding dogs. I never said it was alright for dogs to go around killing anything on anyone elses property. I also have issues with bad dogs. My point was simply that too many people on BYC seem ready to shoot first and ask questions later. My main point that seems to have been missed by almost everybody is concerning WILD predators. Check out my posts and in almost every one my main concern has been killing wild predators, especially protected and endangered species.

This is geting too personal so I'll sign off this thread. Have fun folks!

Dont think anyone said it was Ok to kill endangered species'

I for one would never kill one. Coons and other predators are at record highs here in my state. Even the state law you must kill any coon that you trap.

Dog kill for fun, lost over 20 chicken in a hour time. All from a dog.

Fortunately for you, I happen to be a people, and I'm here to help.

Here's a rough guide, feel free to ask for any specifics of special concern:

elephant
horse
dog
bull
goat
parrot
sheep
cat
duck
chicken
hamster
mouse
bugs

* note that there are exceptions to Oblio's Hierarchy of Animals. For example, a well trained Great Dane would rank below a good Thoroughbred eventer, but above a lame grade horse. A wheaten Marans pullet would rank above a pekin duck because the latter look like they fell out of the ugly tree and hit every branch on the way down.

I disagree with more than half that list.

My chickens don't rank higher than my dog. They do rank higher than anyone else's dog. I love dogs but I love my dogs not destructive, untrained dogs allowed to roam by irresponsible people. Those are equal to the coyotes that keep running through my yard every night. I also love my cats and probably place them equal to my chickens and probably just barely below my dog or horses but the random feral and barn cats that roam the countryside I barely place above pests like raccoons and rats. It's not just the species. It's the individual animal and everyone's list is going to be entirely different along with having their pets well above destructive strays.
