I'm a volunteer trail guide at Mission Trails Regional Park. I was guiding a group of kids through the park when some crazed woman ran up screaming "He's down! He's down!". I ran over to where she was pointing and found an elderly guy slumped over beside the trail. At first I thought it was a heart attack, but after I looked It was heat exhaustion.
I doused him with my water, called the rangerstation, and sent my tour group back to a shady spot to wait(In case things went badly I didn't want the kids to see)
The woman was still frantic so I gave her my walking stick, extra water, and sunglasses to hold. Not a very important job but it shut her up.
I had another guy talk to the old guy so I could evaluate his speach pattern and look for signs of other injury.
While waiting for the park ranger in the airconditioned truck, I found out he was running....It was noon...in the valley....hot and humid.....I run marathons and I don't run in the valley at noon.
If I hadn't been there to give first aid he may well have died.
Everyone out there please exercise some common brain power. Exercise is great...but don't let it kill you!
