I'm so sorry! Losing little ones is the worst.

I candled my duck eggs again this morning. I was right about the questionable egg - it was just a bit slower than the others and has beating heart now! It's still smaller than the others, but it looks healthy - I moved it to another place in the incubator, because it was right underneath the fan, and I'm wondering if I have a slight cool spot there.

So 4 of my 6 eggs are fine. I took the two quitters out an opened them. The one that I suspected might have frozen a little bit had begun to develop, but the yolk ruptured - it went everywhere when I opened the egg up. The other one had a blood ring in a weird place, sort of stuck to the side of the egg, even though I know these eggs have been turned correctly (I'm hand-turning my Octagon 20 'bator).

I went and bought the materials I needed for my homemade 'bator yesterday! I'm planning on having it finished by Wednesday, and then testing it with another batch of duck eggs!

Thank you everyone for your replies. The last 4 are doing great, but I didn't get any sleep all night worrying about my cats getting to them.

It's day 10 for me on my eggs, plan to candle again tonight.

Sparkelrose sorry to haer of your loss.

Glad the others are doing good.

Yup. Last night Babylady4 and I candled those eggs. It was really neat to see them "waving" at us. She was so upset when she dropped the flashlight. I told her that that stuff happens. It's a good thing I read on BYC just yesterday what to do when that happens. So we waxed the cracks really good and now we just hope for the best. I have one quail egg here that I must have cracked. When I candled them the other day I found the crack. It just happens to be the eggs with the most developement. So it must be just fine.

And only 5 more days for the one under my broody hen. Thursday is the day it's to hatch. It's "waving" like crazy out there.

Awesome job on the candling you guys all did. When I candled yesterday, I only took out the quail eggs that had nothing in them. I will wait with everyone else.

Absolutely - I'm just working on editing them (I've found that the pictures come out much clearer if you take them from a distance, and then crop them down to size) AND I took a video tonight that I'll upload to youtube! They're all going strong!

Edit: - The internet is being funny, so the video will have to wait until tomorrow, but here's one of tonight's pictures:

I am heartbroken! I woke up this morning and went to check on the eggs- the incubator was unplugged! I remember unplugging it last night while I was candling so that I could see better. I could have sworn I plugged it back in.

I was so excited because I could see this LARGE dancing mass in one of my cochin eggs that I had to go show my mom... Now I've killed my babies- the temp was 63 degrees when I plugged it back in. I feel HORRIBLE!

I plugged it back in before I went to work- so we'll see. I'm so sad. I was just saying last night that I must be doing something right because I saw some development. This first hatch has been nothing but trials & set backs- mostly due to my homemade incubators. I ended up making a bigger incubator with a 25w bulb. I have a pc fan on the way...

I'll wait a few more days before starting to chuck the duds from the first 9. I have 6 more that were started 3-4 days later.
