At Day 18, you set your humidity and quit turning the eggs. You close up the bator (lock down) and don't open it until the hatch is over. If you need to add water, do it through the vent hole with a straw. Otherwise you risk shrink wrapping the ones that haven't hatched and they die in the shells.
I've read that chicks in detatched air cells have a difficult time hatching. You will want to hatch it upright in an egg carton.
Can I just unplug the turner and keep them in that? Humidity is at 70, right? Right now, I'd be real haapy if one hatched out of all the eggs in there/.......
I wouldn't. Chicks flop around a lot when they hatch and body parts can get stuck between the rails.
Last time I hatched on the wire mesh, and there was lots of chickie soccer going on with the unhatched eggs. So this time I'll be hatching in egg cartons. Just remember to put them in wide end up. (where the air sac is)
Fordmommy......they are beautiful, congrats! How long until the eggs in your bator hatch?
Congrats on all the babies hatching! They're adorable (and so is Chipmunk!)
All of my incubator dilemmas are solved! I just won an auction over in the "Everything Else For Sale" forum - another Brinsea Octagon 20 Eco with an auto-turning cradle, all for $140!
Just wait until you see all the babies I'm going to hatch! I have Columbian Bantam Cochins that should arrive Monday/Tuesday of next week!

My bator here is due Saturday and then some. Not sure how long, I have bobwhite quail in there too. And they say 23-26 days, but they have been know to go as long as 32 days.
I called Babylady4 a little while ago and she said I have 5 more babies there. I'll wait til tonight and call her again and see how many. I'm going to pick those up tomorrow.
Yep - I'm picking it up next week to save the $10 shipping. I was on the Brinsea website all morning trying to decide whether to order another Octagon 20 or try the new little Mini Eco 'bator, when it occurred to me to check the auctions here on BYC - and there's a great Octagon 20 Eco, with the auto-turning cradle, just an hour away from me at the same price I would have paid for the auto-turning Mini-Advance that would hold only 8 of my duck eggs if I really crammed them in - and I was planning a trip to Madison next week anyway!

When I saw it, I thought of what you said and you trying to build one.
Well I decided to check my questionables in the bator a few minutes ago. The 2 mutt eggs from Joe are officially clear, changed batteries in the mag light, makes a big difference, I can see!
And the silkie egg that looked odd.... still looks odd. I'm thinking it's a quiter but will give it more time before I toss.
I tried calibrating my hygrometer for the hatch... well... even with calibrating before and being 14% off then didn't prepare me for this..... it's 25 % off, as in too low. Hmmm..... that would account for losing the 4 dozen in the last hatch if it had gone bad during incubation.
So..... I'm looking for my non digital hygrometer to see if it can be used for the last 3 days....
I live in the middle of nowhere!
Actually I have a couple laying around in the garage, just have get myself motivated to dig through it and the dust in there
