i somehow acquired 2 runaways and i have questions. please help

also. i don't think the rotating one would suit. i got the two bowl one so they can choose between the pellets and the crumble. they eat both. but only one would be available at a time with the 3 bowls rotating.

second test complete!
i put the clip on so they would both open at the same time.
i set them both for an hour and set a timer for an hour on my phone. there's this little white piece of plastic that holds the lids down so when the grey plastic goes past that, it opens.
i circled the clip that opens them at the same time and the arrows are on the white plastic bits. see the grey is overlapping the white. that's what holds it down.

the right side passed the white plastic bit ages before the timer went off. but it didn't open because of the clip. the left side waited until 14 minutes after the hour timer went off. so i think the left side is just slow.

i'll try it tonight with the clip and set it an hour before the coop door opens.

thank you for reading my experiment 😂😂😂

So that means it works- just in a slightly staggered timeline?
I would probably not link them because it may add strain to the clip to keep one closed when it wants to open?

yes.
linking them is ok. they are very light lids.
i was thinking i could link them and just set the timer on the right side, but it does leave the left side loose enough that somemouse could probably lift and squeeze through if he wanted to. (he probably wants to).
when the timers are set, the lids are tightly closed.
so what i will try tonight is set the left side for 15 hours and the right for 16.
see what happens.

also. how depressing is it that it's dark for 16 hours?
Whew, bad enough here! The chickens are starting to wake around 7 am and put themselves to bed around 5:15 or 5:30, and that feels bad enough.

8 more days until summer begins to return!

i can't wait! i hate winter.
sunset here is like 4:15 or something and sunrise is getting near 8:40am. it's just always dark. especially with all the rain, if it's not dark, it's grey.
but our summers are the opposite! it stays bright until almost 11pm.
it really messes the chickens up, but they will go to bed between 7-9pm in summer

I once went on a choral trip to London in early July, five months pregnant (whoa, 38 years ago.) Our hotel had blackout curtains, but the room was still getting light at 4 am, and like you said, still light until almost midnight.

You can read about it, but you have to actually experience it to understand. I think that was about when I figured out that New York City is on about the same latitude as Madrid, which was quite a shock to process.

i don't actually know that. i think my husband said it to me once. or he got stuck on a flight in newfoundland. nevermind. i am probably wrong about everything i just said 😂
