I started them in the incubator today! 6-20-12

Aww soo sorry, so far our 7 are doing good but we to lost one, it was 2nd to last to hatch and hatched real fast..,. Im thinking tooo fast:/ cause pipped and zipped with in an dour where as everyone else took there time... Its so sad to lose them especailly since we start to bond whenthere in the egg... I know i did the moment i saw movement. Hope she hangs in there, have you tried giving it avc and honey in water ?

She's still barely hanging on.  I've got her wrapped in a rag on a heating pad that is covered (so it won't be too hot) & set on low.  She's hardly moving.  I've tried to give her sugar water with vitamins and electolytes, but she gags and bubbles.  I don't have the heart to cull.  Comfort is the only thing I have to offer.  My son & I have been swapping off holding her and keeping her company.  I'll try some honey in the water.  I can only put a drop be side her beak.  I can tell she wants to drink, but she can't.  She has no control of her neck muscles & is just weak in general.  :hit

Awww im so sorry

We lost her this afternoon. She passed peacely. I'm so tender hearted. My husband wasn't home to handle the situation for me. I just don't have the heart to do it. Bugs and spiders are one thing, but animals are another. I can't even crack the eggs to find out what I did wrong. Maybe I'll get a broody hen out of all of these new babies later on.

We may lose one of our Polish. She's so tiny. I still have her inside. I find that they do better the quicker I can move them to the big brooder with the other chicks. Kinda like follow the leader. It's like she has narcolepsy. She'll walk and then, her nose is in the ground. She's not fond of us picking her up and giving her sugar water either. I'm moving the one that is doing so good to the big brooder today then, cleaning out the bator for the next hatch. I'm praying that you nor I or anyone else loses anymore babies. It's too heartbreaking.

My 4 week old chicks went to the run and coop 2 days ago. They have thought they were in Heaven with access to all the bugs, grass, and space to explore and not be so close to each other. Eventhough, I thought w/ this brooder they would be spread out enough, it wasn't or they were extremely bored. I've got to invest in an automatic coop door now. This morning when I went out the door from the coop to the run was open. I say door. It was only a board wedged in front of the entrance to the run. When I got to there, all of my girls were in the run having a blast just clucking, pecking, and scratching. Well, that scared me.

I would also like to get a solar light to put in the coop for the girls. They never liked the dark in the carport so, I always left a blind open so the light from the kitchen would shine in for them. We don't have power in the coop, and I don't think my husband has plans on putting any out there.

Do any of you use solar power for automatic doors and lights on the coop? If so, how do you like it and where did you get it?

What about watering systems? I've found that the 3 gallon thing that I have to fill and carry back and then put back together does not work for me or them. So, I may put in a cup system. Do any of you use those? I know they sell nipple systems, but the cups seem like a better idea for us. Do any of you use the fountain?

I've been looking around I just want some personal opinions on these things. I know this is lengthy, but these are things we have to consider now that we are "chicken mommys and daddys". Plus, it makes for good 'chicken conversation'.

We have no electricity either, and we have a 5 gallon bucket with nipples that i fill and change everyother day, when its really hot i have frozen water in 2 liters that i just through in the bucket keeps the water nice a cool.... I do plan ln hangong some solar leds for the fall and winter time, but we are in the mist of planning to build one big coop for all our girls ( we have several small little hutchs/houses) so we can downsize and make room for growing veggies. I want to repurose windows and old doors for the wall of the coop... Lol lets see how that goes, cause i can see it but getting my husband on board is the tricky part.

My husband was not aware of all that was involved in having chicks. We have one big coop and run. It's not big enough to separate everyone. I want to have a separate place for my silkies, goldens, layers, mixes, & jerseys (you get the picture). I don't want mixes. Nothing wrong with mixes and probably what I'll have for a while. I have some bantam mixes that are the sweetest and cutest little things. I can't/ don't do gardens. I've tried and if weeds were a specialty then, I'd have that covered. I just can't grow anything but weeds and squash. And of course, no one in my family eats squash but me. lol

Update on Peanut...he is doing ok! Vet checked him and said no pain, probably nerve damage is why he is having a hard time standing, stil hasn't been able to yet, but hopefully it is temporary and he will figure out a modified way to upright himself. She said by 4 weeks I will have a solid vision of his future and hope for the best, if I could get a picture from my phone I would, but can't figure it out. We are hoping it is a girl, but I keep referring to "him"
