I survived my first week working for Walmart...

Walmart seems to be pretty hit or miss, I've been in some very trashy stores in MN, but consider myself lucky to have gotten a job at the one here in MT. Its actually one of the highest paying jobs in town, best prices and actual decent quality, as compared to the other ones I've been too. I've been working there for about a month and a half. Like with any jobs, be happy in your own little world and ignore all of those that seem to thrive on negitivity.

Just realized that the OP lives in New Jersey. SO wish we had Walmart back when I lived there in Flemington; all we had was K-mart, and it was almost an hour away. I think they put one in right after we moved to Kansas

That's great! I hope you continue to enjoy it.

I read an article about a year ago by a reporter who wanted to find out what working for Walmart was really like because he'd heard all of the bad press, so he applied for a job there. He told about the hiring, training, etc. and was actually pleasantly surprised about his experience.

Congrats! I hear so much bad about Wal-Mart, but the one here is just fine. It's always spotless, and the same people have been working there for years, so they must treat their employees pretty decently. If I have a question or need help finding something, they go out of their way to help.

As for the rest of you, thanks for the encouragement! I have to keep positive, otherwise those who are negative just bring you down. The other day they had me working with this one girl who had been with Walmart for a long time. All she did was text on her cell phone and complain. That afternoon when we were done with our first job, I went to a different advisor and asked if they had a job for me to do. It was sooo much better being away from her!

The only downside is that the remodel team I am working with also has quite a few temp workers that they hired. It can be difficult working with them because some only speak spanish. I know a little spanish so it helps, but it does slow down the work. It's probably frustrating on both ends I'm sure!

I agree that attitude is key to job enjoyment, & I'm glad you're thriving in your new job. But I think that working on a WalMart remodel team is different than being a cashier or part of a department team in the store.

I know someone who did both and being a department manager (the first rung up on the promotion ladder) was really rough. He had a dozen or so different store managers & asst. managers telling him he must complete different tasks each day, expecting him to do the work of 2 or 3 people. Like many other places, WalMart tries to cut their costs by squeezing extra work from fewer employees. When he got transferred to a store to head a remodel team he felt as if he were on vacation.

I think a lot also depends on the individual store and the management that runs it. Some stores have a more pleasant work climate than others.

They have everything so well mapped out and all the wrinkles ironed very well, there is no confusion about policies or how to do something its all so straightforeward. I've found their absence and time off policies very flexable compared to what I'm used to. You're always going to run into people who will hate their job no matter where it is just got to learn to ignore and avoid it, they are usually they type of people who will never be happy. Another great thing is if you decide to move anywhere, you've got a nearly guarenteed job with them by transfering.

My wife has worked part time at wal mart for over two years. She even quit for a short while and when she went back they where anxious to have her back. She only works about 15 hours a week because her real career is a Homemaker (her choice) but as the kids grew up being at home all the time started getting old. so this gives her a reason to get out of the house about half the time. Wal mart as a corporation does not seem so bad to me. they are not perfect. the store my wife works at has been wonderful about flexible schedules and what not. My wife is not the most dedicated employee and they know it. She can walk away any time she get tired of it but has never even considered it. She likes the people she works with and they like the job she does. Her only real complaint is the customers. But she handles them pretty well.
