Hi,
I am on day 20 and 5 out of 14 eggs have hatched this morning. It looks to me like an easter egger egg has a crack down the length of one side which I did not see on lockdown day. Is it possible that it cracked being knocked by the chicks? Should I take it out? Is there a chance it could explode and spread bacteria? I can't see a pip yet but it could be on a side I can't see. I have 6 EE in and can't see a pip on any of those eggs though.

Hi. :frow

Sounds like your thermometer is off unless you started your day count incorrectly.

I would leave it and let nature take it's course. I've never YET had an egg explode (But all are candled as viable before lock down so not super rotten if they do pass). And my chicks ALWAYS play hatching egg soccer! :barnie

:fl :jumpy :jumpy Pics always welcome. ;)

I am a bit surprised that they are hatching so maybe I did count wrong. They went in at 9:00 a.m. on April 4th. I did lockdown at 9:00 a.m yesterday (assuming that was the end of day 18 beginning of day 19) making today day 20. 2 had hatched before I looked at 6:00 a.m today and between 6 and 10:00 a.m. 3 more had hatched. I have a few breeds in and interestingly the EE and the black copper marans show no signs of pips and the welsummers and faverolle show pips. The other two that hatched were my own eggs which are mixed breeds. Only my second time incubating so don't really have any personnel experience to rely on. Perhaps today is really day 21? Temp was stable at 99.5 (two thermometers) and humidity was around 25 - 35 until lockdown when I raised it to 65. (two thermometers).

Today is day 20. Your temp is probably a little high, but if they are hatching ok, I wouldn't worry much about it.

The lengthwise crack could very well be a pip! Especially if you can't see it from every angle. If nothing is oozing from it, I'd leave it be.

Best of luck!

Thanks for the advice. I'll keep an eye on it. Nothing oozing. Maybe it is the temp.? I'll double chick accuracy after these eggs have all hatched. If the temp is high is there a chance some eggs will not hatch?
