We have a variety of breeds in our coop. We have recently discovered "silkies" and purchased three adults, two hens, one rooster. One of the hens started sitting 21 days ago. Today being the "magic day" we went out to check on her and her two eggs. When we looked in the coop, she was off the nest and seemed to be in distress, one of the eggs was still in her nest, but he other is gone. Completely gone. No remnants of shell or anything. It was there yesterday. Could our other hens have eaten the hatchling and the shell? I know how small a silkie hatchling is and have seen our hens eat a broken egg, shell and all. Confused, disappointed, and broken hearted. Thanks.
