I thought I was a brahma, whose my mamma?

I agree with the Cochin comment.

I only see a single comb on this bird. While she does have the body type of a Brahma, her comb tells me there is something else in her bloodlines.

Now that I look at her a bit better...I'm wondering if there's not some Langshan in there. I can't see the feathering on her legs very well but she almost looks like she has Australorp in her.

As a chick she seemed more along the lines of Cochin but I can't tell how her legs have feathered out now.

I also thought at first she was a cochin with really really really poor type, but I think this is probably a black brahma with a bad comb. Hey, it happens.

I may have solved the mystery of how black betty got to be so... well...er...black.

I phoned the breeder last night and he was surprised to hear she was black, he expected her to be a dark brahma as that is what he breeds. The only thing he ever had that was black on his farm was a black orpington rooster someone abandoned at his farm one weekend. He thinks maybe the young roo got lucky with one of his dark brahma's and Black betty is the result!

I have buff Orpingtons and I guess that makes sense if she somehow got her colour from her pop and her body shape from her ma.

What a scream, an illigitimate chicken! The guy was quite indignant as he sells pure showbirds, even offered to replace her, but we think that happily since she is a one-off she is perfect in every way.

It will be interesting to see what kind of eggs shelays when she eventually gets going.

Cat, I'm still laughing after reading your PM.

Orp and brahma huh? Well two sweet breeds so she should be a lovable little thing. Make that lovable BIG thing with those parents.
Good luck with her and all your chooks. It was nice to meet you over a little indiscretion on the part of a roo.
