I wanna raise chicken for a living?

I am with Royd and Sourland..

Play around start small.. See if you can find a market in your area.. DO not stick 50K into something that may or may not work..

Keep your job and slowly make the shift to self employed.. If you want to be involved in agriculture then so be it... It can be real tough to make ends meet.

Start with a few chickens or rabbits or what ever you think will work best for you. There is no formula for this. Sounds like you know how to be frugal and conservative with your money that is a good start!

Keep in mind it may take years or decades to reach your goals. Most likely your goals will change.. Think a lot and stay flexible..

Well if you've managed to save that much in 2 1/2 years maybe my husband and I should give up farming and our cow herd and get a job in a chinese restaurant.

Livestock whether it's chickens or cattle require a lot of hard work and long days if you want to make even a little money at it. I work 365 days a year......most days at least a 12 hour day if not more.

How so you can't make more than me if you work 12hr a day and all year long, I get paid monthly, $2,700 and I get free food and place to live.

Is that free Chinese food, from the resturant? Let's see...3 meals per day, at $10 per =$30. Free place to live...Is it just a room and bathroom or access to a whole house...Minimum, on the open market, $400 a month. So, your monthly income is about$2,700+ 900+400=$4,000x12= $48,000 per year...Better stick with the resturant, if the work is steady, the pay is good, and the boss isn't a slave driver.

You can always use Chinese food (if they don't use MSG) to supplement the chicken food...

I can't be doing that forever, I'm basically sick of the long hours of work and I wanna work 40hr a week job and plus they pay me cash under the table so it's hard to put the money in the bank legitimately and I'm a legal resident so I should go with some American jobs, I was thinking about being a truck driver but I got a ticket and an accident so I dont know if they will hire me.

At some point, you have to be accountable to Uncle Sam, for some of the money....Just claim that you are self employed. Of course, you'll be responsible for everything that you claim. BTW, that will take a big piece of your money Probably 20%. Don't end up behind the curve, with the government...They don't know the meaning of mercy.

Most of the posters covered it. But if we didn't use the manure in our chemical free gardens, enjoy eggs ourselves, we really would not cover our expenses. The cost of everything is expensive and with rising gasoline prices, feed is going up much much higher....You have to calculate periods of time when hens are not laying and you will be feeding them. The unexpected and it will occur... the tornado that rips your chicken trailer apart and scatters your chickens, etc., etc. No, I've been working with poultry now over 5 years and no we haven't really made money! But if it's a hobby of yours, you can do all you can to hope that the birds are paying part of their way... and that the other part for us the wonderful eggs and the manure are a side benefit. great luck. Nancy

Wow do you have it good! Cash under the table to boot... Then add another 20% to your "actual" income as Royd calculated

Better be careful we are all going to want your job.

If you want a 40 hour a week job, then agriculture is not it.. You are taking home more than many small farmers who work 7 days a week and a heck of a lot more than 40 hours a week do.

One gets involved in agriculture because of a deep passion for it, not because of a 40 hour week or a high income.....

For a 40 hour week.. Well I am not sure if jobs that pay more than you are making exist where you only work 40 hours a week. Go get a BA or BS, even then you will not work 40 hours a week. But at least it will not be in a restaurant if you have an aversion to it.

If you want healty food for yourself do as Bargain says..

If you want extra eggs and to sell give friends eggs and eat alot of chicken, and eggs and feed you animals (if you have dogs, cats, snakes, ferrets, etc) then go in small- see how much work 20 chicken are.

Also check your local laws for poultry processing and sale, egg sale.

I'm tempted to trade jobs with you but I like chinese food too much. I would probably weigh 400lbs after the first year. Then again they would probably fire me after I put them in the hole the first week.

Seriously unless you just happened to be in the right situation it will be hard to do as well as you are doing now. I've come to understand that you must live within a reasonable driving distance to a fairly large population or there are just not enough customers. I make a 2 hour drive to get to a good market and of course there is lot's of competition there.

"Why did you say an Asian market? I mean I'm Asian myself but I don't get it."

A lot of the people I sell to at the big market I spoke of earlier are Asian. It seems that a lot of Asian immigrants perfer to buy thier poultry live and process it themselves rather than buy it at the store.
