I want a kitten SO bad...

I have found it to be generally true that males are more loving than females, but my parents have a male and he is a mean little snot. They loooove him (he is referred to as my little brother), but he is a complete brat. He's half Himalayan and beautiful, but devious and mean. Except he loves my dad. If it were me and I definitely wanted a cuddly cat, I would try to find an adult that had the personality I was looking for. It can be hard to predict what a kitten is going to be like when it grows up. For example, my parent's cat was sweet and friendly as a kitten. I'm not really much of a cat person, but I had a barn cat when I was a teenager that acted more like a dog than a cat. That's the kind of cat I would like. He was so sweet.

I met a male Siamese years back that attacked my hand when I rubbed his head. I'm talking, flipped over on his back and got my hand with all four paws AND his teeth, drawing lots of blood! (Come to think of it, this is about the time that I developed severe allergies to cats.... hmmmmm) Anyway, I grew up with a house full of cats and I KNOW cats and how to handle them, but this one male cat was just downright MEAN. His name was Malachi. I'll never forget him.

I wasn't feeling well, and was laying in bed reading before going to sleep. I hear Hershey meowing, which is really unusual for her. I get up, and ask the kids where she is, and no one can find her. We're looking all over the house, outside, and everywhere. It's 10:30 at night at this time.

Oldest ds thought she was behind the refrigerator or stove. DD had gone outside to look for her there. I found the little vixen. Big Sigh. She was IN THE REFRIGERATOR!!

Up on the top shelf, hanging onto some lunchmeat. A little cold, but none the worse for wear. This kitten is going to be the end of me, I tell you.

edited to add: she hadn't been in there more than a few minutes.

I have never been a cat person, until someone dumped 4 kittens on our porch a while back. I took in the Brown Tabby male, and absolutely LOVE him! I like cats that are very loving/affectionate, but not clingy and he is perfect

Kittens can really change in personality! I would get an adult cat, that way you know what you are getting.

I used to think it was bunk that males (in general) are friendlier then females, but after years working with a cat shelter I have come to agree.

My most favorite childhood pet was a 22 pound cat named Yo-Yo. He is the reason I work with animals today! What a sweet, wonderful kitty he was, and so friendly with everyone.

I have never been a cat person (sorry). 2 of my friends have 3-4 cats and they are constantly complaining about them. They are inside cats and they are forever cleaning up vomit (even with cat grass). Cleaning litter boxes. Their furniture is destroyed. Hair everywhere. Cats on countertops (after they have been scratching in the litter box). And a real biggie, can't put up a Christmas tree (they've tried everything). I don't dislike cats at all but after being exposed to their cats, I will never own one personally. I'll just pet theirs.

There are PLENTY of cats that love to be petted and loved on. Have you looked at local shelters, rescues, or online like petfinder or craigslist?
The thing about male cats being calmer than females is more of an individuel cat thing. Our family has two females and two males, and both females are sweeter and calmer than the males(the males only let u scratch them, the females will sleep on and with you). The nice thing about finding a rescue cat (or taking a cat from someone who can no longer keep it) is that the people will already know the cats personality, and you can also ask for a trial period-to see if that cat is right for you.

Kittens can be a pain, and honestly I don't ever want one again...I MUCH prefer older cats. You might want to barrow a kitten from a friend or rescue to see if you actually do want one. Good luck!

Sounds like untrained cats to me. That's the owner's fault, sorry. I've cleaned up one incident of cat puke. I watch their diet carefully. No more hair from the cats than from the dog and all three (1 dog, 2 cats) get groomed regularly so the hair isn't that bad. None of my furnitue is scratched up. That's what scratching posts are for and water guns if the cats ever forget. Sure you have to scoop the cat box, but I have to take my dog out regularly too. As for a christmas tree, after 47 years of those I like any excuse not to have one.
Just saying.
