I Want/ NEED a Rooster!

I would wait another month just incase you do have a rooster who is a slow grower... it's possible. You should have no problem getting a roo later too. People get rid of them left and right!

HI The silkie babies are about 7 weeks and under.I know it takes a long time to tell sex but if your willing to take a chance let me know. Check your area feed stores and see if the take unneeded chicks. Mine does. The store is Agway. I got 7 roos in a st run and they took all but 1. I loved him to much to give him up. Well not yet he crowed the other morn. at 3 so I have to see.

Forgot to mention. the Agway sells rr,leghorns, barred rock in pullet only groups cause they are such good layers Check this out. When the store tells me pullet only they have been right. the only positive roo I have is an oegh.If you go to what breed column and look at my last 2or3 posts you will see some of the kids.

We have never had any problems with our cochin or silkie roos being aggressive towards us except one silkie way back.

I have four kids ranges from 2-9 years old and they all handle the birds, including the roos. Of course, there'll be a few ill behaved ones that will be the exception to the rule, but I'd definitely recommend silkies or bantie cochins for roos.

I live in Salt Lake City, Utah and I think what I have is a polish... the kind with the tall feathers on their head. We were sold all hens and one of them is cockadoodledooing. Does anyone want him? He's a blonde yellow color. I posted pictures on www.ksl.com and craigslist but I haven't figured out how to post pictures here yet. I'll work on it, but "His" name is mom.... I guess we're changing it to Moe. I think I might have another roo too. He was sold to me as a hen and he's an araucana but he's white and silver instead of brown. He's only 6 weeks old so we're not sure yet, but I'm getting concerned. He might be available in a few short weeks. Let me know if you want me to email you some pictures.
thanks.

HI just a note on roos and aggression. We have all kinds ( I am a sucker for a pretty bird at market and roos are the fanciest

) bantams are deffinetly ones I would suggest staying away from with small children. Even the hens can be very very agressive. We have 2 mini bantams though one is 1 lb and one is just under 2 lbs they are the sweetest things, I have no idea if that is common in that tiny of a size or not. I would also suggest staying away from fizzles. Our's is not mean but can be testy and I don't even let our 4 year old son around him.

As for standard breeds alot is in how they are raised.Barred Rocks are one I would say stay away from we have never had a nice one of those. Currently we have a RIR (Big Red) that is around a year old, a Leghorn (Hot Dog) that is closer to 2 and a BLRW (Pretty Boy ) that is also around a year all of which are sweet things. The leghorn (Hot Dog) is undoubtably the baby though and loves to be held when you go in the run. The only other we had that was that sweet as he is and loved attention and being held was a Americanua that was so dosial that he was actually killed by one of our other roos that we ended up getting rid of over the orderial.

He always wanted to be carried around like a baby while you were feeding and to sit on your lap in the afternoon son. I have been told that Americanuas roos can get very mean with age though I have not found this to be the case instead we have problems with the hens of the breed.

If you want a smaller roo that is sweet and easily spoiled a silkie is deffiently the best choice from my experence. If you want a large breed get it young a few months old so as you said you can spoil it yourself.

Hope this gives you alittle insite from someone that has as DH puts it way to many roosters. lol good luck and I hope you find the perfect "boy" for your flock

Hi!

I live in Hope, NJ and I have two silver campine roos and one or two black cochin roos. If you are interested let me know. They are about the same age as your guys!

we have RIR 8 weekers and for AT LEAST the last month we could CLEARLY tell the rooster by his comb and wattle development. And now well he is ALL rooster...just has to start crowing and well you know the other rooster job! He herds the girls around though and protects them etc. Awesome looking bird too...i know just a common or garden RIR but just a really neat looking animal!

Course I think that about all our birds. We have 24 chickens now and 11 eggs in the bator...this when we initially only wanted 3-4girls! What an addictive hobby!

Goodness if you need a roo still . I am south of you and have quite a few you can pick from. Just about any breed you could want in docile. Mays Landing area NJ. Ah what size and color do you want? LOL

Silkies, frizzles, cochins, EE's muts, all sizes.

I adore them and well to me they are too speical to see as someones dinner.
