I want pictures!! Newegg here!! Updated Chick #s p3

I have 7 RIR's and 16 Ameraucanas from breeders that match your list and they are wonderful! The egg production is wonderful! I hope your EE's are all differnt colors. Mine are White, white/orange, greyish black, yellow/brown, white/yellow, black/brown and 1 rooster that is black/blue with a little green and 1 Rooster that is White with orange on his wings! The Ameraucanas all have Rose Combs! I can't wait to start breeding them and hatching chicks this year. Make sure that you have enough space for your new arrivals. That is 4 sq ft inside and 10 or so outside total 210 sq feet, 60 in and 150 out! Roomy is better than squished! Post pice when they arrive! Have fun!

I hope the waiting for their arrival doesn't seem too long!!

WOW you all are SO awesome!! LOVE THE PICS!! Thanks again for the warm welcomes too. I love this obsession!!!

3goodeggs – beautiful BO’s! I love em. BO was the only breed I knew I wanted before we started looking at breeds, and I wouldn’t budge on getting at least 2. You need to post a pic of the red-head LOL.

Riverman – SO CUTE! I’d love to see some more pics as the baby gets older! It’s going to be so cute!

Happy Chooks – nice assortment!! Of course, seeing the other breeds makes me want MORE!! Hehe! Any newer pics to see their progression? Where did you get them from? All still healthy?

Coltssuperbowl83 – lol love the awkward teenager stage. It’s hard to search for photos for the “in between” age of chickens – tons of baby photos and then adult ones but not so many in that teenage state.

Speaking of which, thankfully DH is *almost* as obsessed as I am and he thinks we need to do a photo progression for each chick, so we’re going to try to take 1 photo per day for all 15 to see the progression. Should be fun, hope we can stick with it!

Tuper – AWESOME photos. Thanks so much! You also have great progression pics. Those silkies and cochins are going to be the death of me – definitely will be adding some next year. Is it normal to already be thinking about a coop addition when we haven’t finished the one we’re doing now?? Heheh
Incubating eggs is definitely going to be my next obsession though, I just know it. I posted on another thread about getting a rooster with my current lineup of ladies, and am thinking about an EE rooster down the line. Would be so much fun to hatch our own babies, even if we just sell them, don’t think I could convince DH we need to keep them ALL… what breed did you hatch? Love that last pic of the two.

PepsNick – thanks yeah I’ve checked them out. But I really wanted some chick through adulthood pics which I didn’t see much of over there.

Hi Nate (OkChickens) – thanks for the tips!! We’ll probably be expanding what we’re making now. It’s a 6x8 shed and the run will be 8x20. I didn’t quite make the 4 sq ft/bird but they’ll also be free ranging all afternoon when we get home from work. I’m sure next spring we’ll be expanding it to allow for some new additions, and of course we’ll judge whether our chickens are happy in the 3.2 sq. ft. we’re currently going to give them. We do plan on 4 nest boxes (2 stacked on top of the other 2) and as many roosts as we can fit in there.

QUESTION: Actually that brings me to a question I was wondering. The shed is quite tall, and I was thinking of adding a “2nd floor” about 4 ft off the ground with a ramp up to it and some roosts off of that. Could that extra space (say, 6x3) be counted in the coop square footage?

AZBootsie – yay to see some from Cackle!! Thanks! So beautiful, what wonderful chickens you have! Love the little puffed cheeks (don’t know the proper name for them). Did they all arrive healthy? Did you order a lot of chickens from them? I’m wondering how the shipment of only 5 of them will turn out.

THANKS SO MUCH and keep the pictures coming!! Maybe someone will also be able to answer my question about the 2nd floor. Thanks!

Buff Orpingtons are the chickens that got me to wanting some of my own. I saw a couple at a man's house when I went to look at a horse he had for sale. I had never seen them before and thought they were gorgeous. I bought the horse, too! Anyway, thought about chickens for a couple of years, but didn't do much more than think about them. Then I realized chickens would help with the huge tick problem we have here in the TN woods, so I went for it! My very skeptical DH just went along with it. I bought 6 RIR's and 6 BO's from a local guy. I really expected to lose some but they all thrived! They started out here:

Then graduated to this hoop run:

Then in the summer I built a coop and attached the hoop run:

And here is the horse that started it all!

Oh and one more pic when they were still young:

They free range most of the time and love being out and destroying my flower beds! BUT...the tick problem is soooo much better! And I get eggs!

We lost the Red sex link to a hawk and the Buff Orp passed last December, but the rest are now 2 years old.

Here's the RIR when she began laying:

I have a pic of one girl with just one or two tail feathers, so sad and yet funny at the same time!

UPDATE: I just cancelled my two orders from Meyer and Cackle and placed 1 order at IDEAL Poultry. Advice? Happy with this decision?? I like the fact that they'll all come in 1 order, but I DON'T like the fact I'll get 10 free males as packing material. I've asked them to tag the males so I know. Any advice on what to do? Thanks.

I just placed an order today with Ideal as well. I am ordering 25 chicks... I wonder If I will get any males thrown in ... If I do I wonder If I can request them to tag them as well.

Did you keep the same assortment and number of chicks?

I have an upper level in my run. I read about someone who had done it and thought I could do it too! I did it in the run because that is where I am slightly short of the recommended 10 square feet per bird. I used some shelving boards that I found in the garage and scrap wood left over from building the coop. There is a ramp to go up and down. The ramp was a little steep, so I tied a bunch of hay strings together and wrapped it around the ramp all the way up. Each wrap is about 2 inches apart, just enough to provide traction. I do count it as extra square footage, because it would give any picked on chickens another place to go to get away from any bullies. 3 hens even roost there at night, which I would prefer they didn't, but...what are your gonna do? I am not putting them in the coop every night.
