I want to gift an elderly friend with chicks, what kind?

Yep, that would be what I thought too.

Nasty little creatures that I won't eat. It doesn't seem to bother anyone else that the poor (but still nasty) creatures scream in unison when lowered into the boiling water. Some even try to escape (I always silent cheer them on when they try).
Gritty dined on catfish instead.

Guy that hosted the boil has a pet deer (poor deer, he had to listen to nasty creatures scream too). Gritty was allowed one beer by all the cops in attendance. One! Can you believe that.

Okay now that I'm finished hijacking my own thread, thanks y'all.
I think I have a list made out.

My red sex links are super good layers and very friendly too. They are the ones that always get stepped on at treat time because they don't mind getting close to us. Do you have the space to raise them past brooder age? I'm not sure how elderly he is, but keeping up with the cleaning and water changes for chicks in the brooder might be too much for him.....

That is super nice of you, what a good friend!

I always keep a rhode island red or two (hens NOT roos) in my laying flock. They are very sweet and lay very well.

I vote for:

RIR
Brahma
Orpington
Cochin
Plymouth Rock
EE

Oh but they do! You have to listen real close.

DH is half arkie, half coon....(you know the rest). I've eaten lots of strange things since I moved here from NC, but I put my foot down at eating nasty little mudbugs.

I would probably get him Dominiques and buff orps becaues most elderly people have heard of "Dominickers" and "Yellow Buffs". Thats what I discovered when I consulted my grandmother about chicken breeds.

I have the temp. space to house them. I'll be coordinating this with his son and the man has lots of family around him to help out.
