I want to gift an elderly friend with chicks, what kind?

I am new to chickens, and i only have 3 and they're still young but my black sex link (black star) is super sweet and is growing fast! Maybe he would like a red sex link or a golden comet if the likes the look of a "blonde" bird like the buff orpington? Also my easter egger is very personable and I can't wait to see the eggs she'll eventually lay! Let us know what you decide on and how he likes them!

Oh! and I remember my dad reminiscing about the "dominicker" and buff orpington chickens of his child hood!

Only one beer??? At a boil!!!! Oh, the shame. Hopefully they had some corn, potaotes, and garlic boiling in there. One year I put some of my home grown pearl onions in the boil. Tremendous! I do miss the boils up here, whether it is mudbugs, shrimp, or crab. What's wrong with decadent living?

Buff Orp and Brahmas are a given. Consider red and black sex link. I'd put Delaware on the list. They have personality!!! Australorp are nice winter layers. That's red and yellow, black and white. A good mixed flock. Either a dominique or barred rock. Add a partridge rock and one of the laced Wyandottes. Now you have patterns. Add an EE or two and maybe a Maran or Welsummer. Now you have egg color variety and you probably have enough.

Nasty little creatures that I won't eat. It doesn't seem to bother anyone else that the poor (but still nasty) creatures scream in unison when lowered into the boiling water. Some even try to escape (I always silent cheer them on when they try).
Gritty dined on catfish instead.

Guy that hosted the boil has a pet deer (poor deer, he had to listen to nasty creatures scream too). Gritty was allowed one beer by all the cops in attendance. One! Can you believe that.

Okay now that I'm finished hijacking my own thread, thanks y'all.
I think I have a list made out.

ONE beer?? How how cruel!!

I like the buff orps...EE's..Black sex links..and golden comets..
those are my friendliest birds and they lay good too.

We were invited back for this weekend (maybe) to eat up some of the ton of catfish that the guy had to freeze, since everyone 'cept me seemed to want to dine on the nasty creatures instead.
Gritty is already brainstorming about a designated driver since Keith still can't drive and I really need a good buzz. I'm due for one even. I'm thinking that our local state trooper might be my best bet. Can't get much safer than have a trooper for a designated driver.

Okay, so the list would be:
1 barred rock
1 easter eggers
1 speckled sussex
1 buff orp.
1 sex link, color to be determined
1 dominique
1 brahma
and 1 turken

Sound good?

"mudbug boil" = crawfish boil (I assume)

Had to google it myself.

Can you tell I've lived in CA all my life?

My vote, not necessarily in order:

Brahma
Orpington
Australorp
Barred Rock
Easter Egger

ETA: Maybe a Marans? I know they are known for being gentle, but I don't know about getting them from a hatchery.

I really think a turken will be a hoot for an elderly person. Lots of people have never seen them and they are so silly looking. I am very fond of the blue ones.

Yeah and I'm ordering some turkens for myself, so bonus! I don't have to pay a service charge for a different breed.

Sounds pretty good to me. I don't know what colors you will wind up with as far as the EE, Brahma or Turken. Up close the colors are all great but from a distance I find the lighter colors really stand out. I'd try to get at least one of them white or mostly white for a contrast with the others.

Personally I rank mudbugs way ahead of lobster and about equal to shrimp. They are a little behind crab in flavor but a whole lot easier to peel. Fried catfish can rank in there pretty well if it is done right, but it is easy to overcook catfish and the batter makes a big difference. Even overcooked mudbugs, shrimp, and crab still taste pretty good but that does make them harder to peel.
