I want to gift an elderly friend with chicks, what kind?

You could get him some orps in different colors...or get him a few buff orps and then a few different colored giant cochins...same look...big heavy fluffy..VERY GENTLE!!! Anywho...that's my 2cents! You're a Sweet thoughtful person!

Your list will get longer the more people who respond to you.... I'm surprised the Silkie people haven't chimed in yet! (And I agree with all the above respondants. And our Cornish Bantam was my little girl's favorite; used to come in and watch TV with her!)

I'm gonna say get australorps: very docile and great egg layer, fetching all them eggs will keep him busy. That's great your doing this.

I'm all for decadent living too, but I dislike any food that I have to fight with to eat. Give me a good ol' ribeye or filet mignon over something with a shell any day.

I'm going to call Ideal this week to add to my order, as soon as I check with his son about exactly how much space his dad has.

Don't know if this has any bearing here or not, but have you run this idea by his son? My grandparents wanted to keep chickens and other animals long past the time they were physically able to take decent care of them. Maybe his son hasn't helped him replace them for a reason. Then again maybe he's able to do it with no trouble.

Yeah, I talked to his son once about it already, but I'm going to talk to him again this week when he is a bit more *ut hum* sober. It was a mudbug boil after all.

The elderly man is fit as a fiddle. I wish I was that capable.
