I Want To Thank You Chick Sexer!

YAY!! I hope you're right and he's really still a she!!

Based on that picture of the leghorn roo, this shouldn't be one!

I was told this batch was hatched on November 11th, so they're a week shy of five months. The other two, siblings (I was told), don't have half this much wattle; however, one is just as bright red...but they also aren't as dominant when we feed treats. This is the *dominant* bird now. Aggressive with treats & such.

Odd you mentioned eggs- We *just* started getting our first white eggs (only our leghorns will lay white) last week!!! -But I assumed it was the other female, whose wattle was bright red but half the size... I haven't caught them on the nest yet so I don't know. It's one of them!

The thing that convinced me that "she" was a "he" was that in the past two days or so, Elvis started separating from the crew when they free-ranged. (I'll just call it "he" for now) The girls would go free-range the yard (not big, 0.8 acre), and Elvis would hang back, in the area visible around the house/coop. I would go ck on him and he'd be alone, walking that perimeter of the yard--visible to the house/coop--with his head out, feathers fluffed, beak open, making a constant low but loud squawking noise. I'd pick him up and take him to the other ladies but he'd check them out then go straight back to the area around the henhouse, where he'd presume walking the edges, eyeing everything, making loud "CCAAAAWWWWWW" sounds (not crows). I mean, for HIM, it was OK for him to be away from the others; the others weren't like this. They wanted to be with the group. Plus, I never caught Elvis even near the nest box. He's always the first up and the last down, and when doing so, he's always making near-constant beak-open 'caw's.

He just paces the area adjacent to the coop/house like a soldier, without going into it, whenever the others were ranging. I thought that seemed odd... ? (too much detail, I know. lol sorry!)

It's just ALWAYS making some kind of noise. Morning, noon, night, when I go out and hear a horrid loud noise, it's this bird. Beak open, head out, scratching out a loud layered sound...but not an official "crow" like you hear on videos.

Now I'm thinking - Maybe she's just started laying and is feeling her oats..? I hope so!!! I hope you're right!! *Someone* just started laying!

I would love it if she's still a she! Thanks for giving me hope!

At just shy of 5 months old, I bet she is your layer! Pick up her psychotic leghorn bum and take a peek. I bet she will have a wide moist vent nailing her as the layer. If you do not have a real rooster, often a hen, the dominant hen, will try and take over the role of a rooster. This will include watching for the flock, perhaps trying to "crow" and even some go as far as mounting the other hens while still popping out eggs. I've had dozens of leghorns and grandpa raised thousands. That's a girl.

I agree with you 100%. That sure does look like my White Leghorn hens, not rooster. And also, when I have not had a rooster in the mix, a dominant hen usually steps up and I have even had them try to crow (not very well).

Yeah that always makes me wonder how many people cull or get rid of their pullets just because they have showy red combs and wattles. . .

Illa, I woulda never culled her. I don't have it in me to kill anything that's been my pet (just my thang, personally). I was gonna have the feed store rehome it for me....

Holly just pick her up and lift her tail and look at her hiney hole. I bet ya it is just like silkiechicken said, about an inch wide and moist. All ya got to do is look. Nothing to touch or anything.

If it looks like what you think a hiney hole is supposed to look like then nope she's not laying yet. LOL For all it's worth I thought it was a hen too but didn't want to upset the apple cart
