I Want To Thank You Chick Sexer!

"Hiney hole?" Are you reading the Sookie Stackhouse series??? Cuz that's something Sookie would say!!! hahaha

And I am not gonna check her cloaca, cuz I really wouldn't have any idea how & it would upset her.

I'm gonna let sleeping dogs lie since she's prob a hen. No need to upset the apple cart now

Umm no and what's a "Sookie"? I was just using those words in case you didn't know what it was called. Sorry. I upset the apple cart anyway.

I was teasing Arizona!!!

It was a compliment- I meant the Sookie Stackhouse series by C. Harris, on which the HBO 'True Blood' was VERY LOOSELY based. Anything compared to her writing is always a compliment! I've read the series about a half-dozen times! HBO doesn't follow the books so closely, but Sookie would *TOTALLY* use terms like "hiney-hole" (which I'd LOVE cuz that's how people TALK in the South! I'm originally from there). I wasn't being icky, I promise!

If you haven't read the Sookie Stack house series, you should, esp if you're in the South. VERY well written. Can't put it down

**added: OK you aren't from the South (AZ) but still, it's a *greatly* written set of books and worth reading

LOL Well once again I have learned something new totally unrelated to animals right here on BYC. Thank you for explaining that and yes I was born and raised in East Texas about 30 miles north of Houston. I am quite fond of the south. I will look into the books and thank you for the compliment. There are a lot of people that don't know what the names are for certain parts so I just use common ones to save confusion. Who wouldn't know what a hiney hole was, right? Anyway, no harm done. I actually thought you were comparing me to that weird New Jersey show with them kids in it. Not sure what it is called but I thought that was the name of one of them. No offense to New Jersey folks but people make fun on that show.

My roo was born in EARLY Dec. 2009. That makes him a little younger than the bird pictured in the OP.

He started crowing about 3 weeks ago. He is almost 5 months old now.
So, you should of heard some crowing by now - I would think.

My leghorns pullets are the same age as the roo, A little younger than yours . . . .
Their combs are about the same size as yours - - - - just not as red yet.
Then again, I don't have any eggs yet

Wanted to add a note that when you purchase chicks from your local feed store, you really can not blame the chick sexers. I was at my local TSC last year and watched kids picking up chicks from one bin and putting them in another bin. Plus when you ask some of the employees if they are hens or not, they say yes but then another person says they are straight run. Some person (not knowing) could end up with boys or meaties and not really know it. That is why I don't purchase from my local TSC anymore.

I was at another feed store (visiting other county) and I really liked their set up. They had their chicks and ducks in a fenced area so you could see them but if you want to purchase you had to get an employee to let you in and they stood there with you will you picked them out. I did purchase 6 chicks from them.

That's good to know Ed! I knew it was kinda a crap shoot re the chicks because the lady at the feed store said "We only offer a 90% guarantee on the sexing." I pointed out to her (nicely) that a "GUARANTEE" by definition must be 100% or it's not a guarantee. It's an assurance of something, a swearing to the fact of. If they're leaving themselves an out like 'hey, there's a 10% chance it's a roo' then IT'S NOT A GUARANTEE. She looked at me like I was an alien for pointing out this obvious discrepancy.

I got the 3 leghorn chicks anyway--they were so adorable!!!

-And I had room for at least three more in my coop at that time.

We're pretty-much a full house at this point so unless we move elsewhere and I build a bigger coop/house, we're done with acquisitions for the time being.

Some breeds have large combs even in the females. That's why the jury is still out on a Marans chicks I hatched out. It does have a large comb, but it's pretty pale still.................Might be a girl...........I hope it's a girl........

PS I love Sookie, and that does sound like something she would say!

I see we all are having a problem knowing if the hen/roo in the OP is a hen/roo so here is what you do you wait till it crows or lays then you will know for sure. Now with that being said an old farmer told me that if you pick a baby chick(1-week old) up between two fingers and it fights to get away it is a hen if it goes limp then it's a roo something to do with the dominment/submissive way of life in the animal world I am still waiting for mine to grow up to find out so try it and see if it is true the next time you buy chicks or wanna buy chicks.

As for the Hen/Roo in th OP My friend will not raise anything other then Leghorns (fiesty lil buggers) and he says that is a hen hands down...

Now As for "True Blood" Y'all back off................SOOKIE IS MINE!!!..............
