I know you said you took a self defense class and "stunk"... Being short has it's advantages, even when fighting.
(be warned this is long>>>i made a "in conclusion" thing at the end. Suggest you skip to it.) I took one of those maybe 2-3 years ago but what he taught us, stuck in my mind. He showed us some videos of people getting kidnapped, one where someone got shot. Then taught us how we could avoid this. If someone walks up to you, demands your watch for instance, Take the watch off. Don't hand it to him. Throw it. This, if not distracts him, gets his goal, away from you. The second you throw it, run. If you yell out for help, don't yell "GET AWAY FROM ME", my mom says people scream this, not always seriously. Kids may scream "GET AWAY FROM ME" if a parent disciplines them, or a person may scream this at a friend, jokingly. more people tend not to answer to this. If you yell, It's probably best to scream "HELP! FIRE! HELP!" fires are less common than a kid screaming get away from me, and people will turn around. I know this wasn't the situation you where in, but even if you "suck", there are some easy things to always remember, day to day. The class i took, it was made specifically for daughters and moms. Complicated moves may be effective, if you remember all the steps! there are VERY basic self defense moves that are easy to remember

! Every time i'm out walking by myself, and i'm about to walk by someone, or someone walks toward me, i remember these: Knee. Elbow. Ears. Kick. Knee and kick being easier for most girls because we tend to have better lower strength than upper strength. Attacking someone with your knee? Go for points. If your in the situation where your feeling the need to attack, Don't hold out. Don't beat them to death if no necessary, but make them remember it's not ok to mess with anyone! no exceptions! Elbow. If someone holds you from behind, your elbow is your best bet! it's bony, it hurts! if you can, you can jab your elbow into their ribs or neck. If they didn't let go, you can go back to kick. sidestep, kick them between the legs, or in the stomach (applies to men as well as woman.), and they've probably let go by now. If your alone, make
them run away from
you. If you can, the second your let go, if there is people near by or a shop or gas station, run for it, even if there aren't people at the gas station or stores, there are usually security cameras!!! as for ear, if you ball up for fists, you'd be surprised how much weight you bring when even a tiny girl like me, hits someone in their ear. The ear is usually accessible, un protected, and when hit, i believe he said it only takes 5 pounds of force to break an eardrum. When you slam your fists to the desk or floor, you probably use 7+pounds. (guesstimating) +the adrenaline you have when being attacked definitely helps! You handled your situation probably the best you anyone could've and i'm so thrilled everything turned out the way it did

!!!!!
(IN CONCLUSION>>>KNEE ELBOW EARS KICK. GET THEM AWAY FROM YOU. IF POSSIBLE, REACH OTHER PEOPLE, USUALLY SAFEST IS TO RUN TO POLICE, OR STAFF. KNEE ELBOW EARS KICK.<<<)
Of course it's always best to have a gun, but you don't always have that option, and anyone who sees this, jus remember: Knee, Elbow, Ears, Kick. Knee elbow ears kick. Knee elbow ears kick. Thrilled you and your dog are ok!!!! These situations are extremely hectic and frightening! Great to have somewhere where your not judged, people care about your safety and your animal's safety!!!
