If you want hens for eggs, then you cant go wrong with Barred Rocks.
If you want chickens for pets, then cochins or silkies are sweet natured.
If you want different colored eggs, then EE aka Easter Eggers are a great choice. (note: most large commercial hatcheries call theirs Araucanas or Ameraucanas which are actually distinctly different breeds)
