are we talking regular store bought eggs at those prices? here i only pay $1.09 per dozen and $1.19 feor 18. not sure about free range cuz you never know how free range or organic they really are. i had a lady about 20 min from my home who sold fresh eggs to the bigger companies and what ever didn't pass inspection (minor fractures, odd shape, too small, etc), at the most she charged was $1.25 for 2 dozen. that was her highest price. it was well worth the drive. too bad her equipment started to break down so she closed. she had to have been in her 80's. i bought from her for years. and that's how long it had been since i bought store bought. and store eggs just don't taste that good. so we just ordered chicks from MPC. get them in may. wanted them sooner, but rather them ship in warm weather for better survival since i'm only getting 6. i miss fresh eggs.
Large white "omega" eggs (not free-range, not organic, not brown, not jumbo...) are $3.55 a dozen, on sale this week for $3 a dozen.
The higher-end eggs are never on sale and, like I said, go for almost $6 a dozen. My mom and a few of my friends buy them every week and would much rather give me $5 for eggs that are 10 times better anyways!
White eggs are $1.49 and brown are $2.13 right now in the store. I haven't sold to anyone but family for awhile now, but I have decided when I do, it will be $2.50 or $3.00 a dozen or I will just use them. I am so tired of people thinking they should be cheaper than the store! Great to hear someone is getting a decent price.
I was getting $6 a dozen for pasture raised eggs when I had my LF flock people bought them because they were so pretty. I had Wellsummers, Faverolles, BCM, True Ameraucana, and Olive eggers laying and thats why people paid top $ for my eggs. I mostly sell hatching eggs here because I have bantams and a breed there is a good amount of demand for so no more $6 a dozen anymore.
By next year my goal is to sell "rainbow eggs" so I'm starting a flock of EE's and olive eggers right now, looking to add welsummers or marans ASAP, as well as a few more brown leghorns (such sweeties!). I figure I can then get $6 a dozen, it helps to pay for the flock's keep that's for sure!
I am also planning on breeding silkies (whites, reds and blues) as well as a couple other breeds so will be selling hatching eggs, too!
I'm in this for the long haul and every day is a new adventure waiting to happen!
I get anywhere between $2-5 per doz. for my eggs. I find that friends and family like knowing where their food really comes from, and that it is a trusted source. But then, I am the same way - I'd rather pay more to my friends for a service or product than a little less to some big chain or complete stranger.
Congrats on a beautiful batch of eggs!!! You are one lucky lady to have a DH that says you need more chickens!!!
