This is the FIRST YEAR in 3yrs that I am not getting CHICKS!! I'm very proud of myself, I actually have 2 more chickens than I want. My husband said NO to more chicks, The suburb said "NO" to chickens a long time ago!!going to see how this plays out.....
That’s what I say every spring. So for I have not been successful. Not sure what I will do when everything need feed but I will be strong if I am force to go into the local TSC, I will not buy more chicks...
Well I don’t think I will,
I hope I dont
Maybe I won’t..
Ok, thanks! Big helpWe've dealt with both issues, at both our TSC and the local feed mill. Still, that's sometimes the best part of the chicken adventure ... the surprise! Still, if you know what you're doing and approach it properly, you can take advantage of the teachable moment and spread some knowledge ... or at least some positive energy!
Oh - and we also need to remember that the store employees don't sex the chicks/duckling/poults. The "experts" at the hatcheries do that and then send them along to the store. Once the babies are in-house, they're mostly kept in open bins ... and we all know what escape artists the little buggers can be. Who knows which bin they'll end up in!
I got 2 Jersey giant pullets from a hatchery... Both Cockerels. I stopped buying from hatcheries after that. I fell in love with both and one turned human aggressive. I still have one and he's a beast.Count on no better than a 90% accuracy rate ... on a good day!
Chicks still pass away though. So nothing is a guarantee.GASP......i barely made it out chickless! New arrivals of bantams at Tractor Supply. One or two really caught my heart, but I was strong and made it out with only the new incubator. Although, i could have gotten a brooder set up, the chicks, feed, etc. and spent less AND they would be guaranteed. With shipped eggs, who knows.
Sigh......
Trust me... I have seen so much death lately that I almost have up on chickens completely this week.True..
