Yes, they are messy. I didn't get my ducklings until early June, so it was fairly warm outside. I moved them out to the grassy patio in an enclosed giant dog crate after just a few days. At least they spent most of the time on the grass, had their food and water there, and only went into the crate to sleep and get warm when they needed to.
I moved them to a coop and fenced area after three or four weeks. I gave them access to the pond at about five weeks - very early I'm told, but they seemed very happy and we didn't have any problems. We had a coop for them, but they never spent any time in it if they could help it.
I'd love to get them to lay in the coop - but that is a topic for another post.
They are funny, and the eggs are great. We eat them for breakfast and use them for baking.
