You can try to move them. Sometimes they leave the nest, sometimes they don't. Just depends on the hen. It's getting pretty late in the year. You may lose some due to the cold. If you have a way to do it, you could pen those girls up separately and put a heat lamp in the pen for the babies until they feather out. If your hens abandon the eggs, I could incubate the eggs for you.

I've had them hatch as late as October and it depends on the weather. Last year I lost some because it was a "little" chilly but really damp - the combination killed them. If it has only been "nippy" they would have been fine.

I have a serama sitting on 4 eggs right now. I moved her inside because she was sitting in our gutted boat and it was really wet. All of her original eggs went bad from being damp.

She moved just fine. My cochins have always been relocated with no problem either.

Oh and I think one of my marans has a hidden nest - Two mornings in a row she was out of the coop before I opened it, gonna have to go for a hunt

My cochin would balance two golf balls on a 2x4 just for the chance to sit and be broody!

Nobody using it right now. All the birds are mad at me cause I am making them eat all the feed they've kicked out of the feeders and wasted!
Have been able to make some room for the new arrivals on Friday. At least no calls saying they would be delayed.

These are my 1st two bantam Orloffs out of the bator. Have hatched five so far with more due on the 20th.

How's this guy doing? Any permanent girlfriends? His little bro is sure a looker with more gray in him. I am keeping him and the splash or spotted female and thats it out of that brood.

Got a call the other night from some very nice folks in WI ( a dad and his 2 children), that I had sold Curly and Charlie to when Lora and I did the June show in Richland Center. I had also given them some Serama hatching eggs that they took home and hatched. All hatched but one, it got cracked. They wanted to know if we were coming to the Poratge show and if we had any girls! Seems they are long on roos and need some more girls. they love the birds!
Charlie got a blue ribbon, for the daughter, at the County Fair like I promised them he would! I told them I had two girls I would bring for them, no, not the splash one. That will be fun. Can't wait til they see some of those little Crele roos! My oh my are they gonna want some birds!

And that egg that Lora... garnered... at Richland Center, is turning into a really pretty white Leggern. He's kinda nice too. when you hold him, he just closes his eyes like Princess and her Mom did.

Are we still on for the am of the 24th Mike? Got a bit of cleaning to do and we are ready to brooder away!

Had the hardest time getting in to read this thread this morning. My computer kept telling me this was an attack site and I was like no way! I read this thread often even if I don't reply often. I had some ducklings hatch out last year around Halloween. I put them under a heat lamp with their mother in a huge cage due to all the rainy wet weather for a few days. The cage was large enough momma did not get hot from the light and the babies could stay warm under the light when they were not under momma and were out to eat and drink. My pullets are looking like they are going to start laying eggs any day

Eric Charming is doing good but since P. is inside on 4 eggs he just roams with the flock. He was sleeping inside his own coop at night but got lonely apparently and has moved into the big coop. His little harem now includes two frizzle cochins, Woo and then Dolly. Dolly is a "Sizzle" NN. She is all black. It seems the banty hens have mostly gravitated to him.

I lost my other serama hen yesterday. We are not sure what happened at all. She was OK earlier in the day although her comb has been pale. I attributted it to her sitting on eggs. Mike let the puppies out around 7pm and found all of them shredding her body. We are sure the dogs didn't kill her, especially the puppies they are only 8 weeks old. My guess is the hawk tried grabbing her again and found her too big to pick up and dropped her. I am really thinking of a chicken tractor for the smaller birds even though the hawk has never been able to get one of them in the past. The hawks have only grabbed older chicks before.

Well, I guess my question is of no matter now. Last night racoons pulled out a window on the horse side of the barn and destroyed the nests. I know they have been in there in the past to eat the cat food, but I thought I had sealed it up tight to protect the hens outside the coop. There were white feathers everywhere so the Cochin at least must have put up a big fight, but believe it or not both hens are OK! They just pulled them off and ate the eggs. Why wouldn't they kill them?
