I haven't figured the savings, but yes, it's cheaper to buy in bulk. Even with the grinding/mixing/delivery fee. Price depends on corn prices that day. I got some delivered today. $325/ton delivered.

I'm pleading the 5th on whether or not Pepper is a boy! EE's and Ameracauna's always trick me.

I've had Coons carry off a full size Pekin duck. The only reason I know, is because I could hear them fighting over it in the timber. They did it more than once. Just the Pekins too, they pretty much leave the chickens alone. Twice I've heard this happen. I told Max he was going to get fired for not doing his job!

No, still gone. And I'm sorry, it was one of the Buckeyes, not a Delaware. I must've got it mixed up when I wrote it last time. It's the one that molted that disappeared. No sign, no nothing. Her feathers were coming back in nicely. The neck feathers have come back in on the one remaining too. They look healthy and are living side-by-side in the coop with the "big girls". They kind of keep to their own little group though. They don't wander too far from the cooper like my big girls do. I'm locking them up earlier in the late afternoon with all the predators that are out and about right now.

You know, just thinking about it, I suppose a hawk or something could've gotten the Buckeye since there's no sign of it anywhere.....??

That is too bad but, you can not apologize for Mother Nature. I would be willing to bet it was a pred that took her. I am glad to hear the feathers grew back on her neck.

I've been feeding Kent primarily, but as my population grows I think I need to look at more economical way. My main flock ranges far and wide and eat very little in the coop, though I know that will change come winter. The chicks waste more than they eat I think

In an effort to cut my costs I have been going 3 parts cracked corn to 1 part Kent feed. My last bag of feed was over $17.00 a bag. They have the ratio on some of their literature about how to cut it. I also cook oatmeal for them and give them sunflower seeds etc. I spoil them.

On another note.... I am getting more people wanting eggs and don't have enough to meet all the people wanting them. I found 2 people willing to sell me some layers for $5.00 a chicken. One person had 9 mos old RIR's. The other one had year old Red Stars. So now I have to decide what to do. I think I am going to add 5 to 8 more to my current flock to try to get a few more eggs.

Yeah, I'm having the same problem - more demand than supply, hence the influx of chicklets recently. Unfortunately many of the breeds I have seem to stop laying in the winter

I have two Welsummers that are still laying, one or two cochins and my black sex links. On the average out of 16 hens I'm getting 3-4 eggs a day.

I have 15 hens, some of them are still young. Some of them were not hatched until May. I am getting 9 to 11 eggs a day. I have Black Sex links, 2 buff orps and 2 australorps. Now I do keep a light on a timer for them. I guess that is something I need to know... what breeds do stop laying in the winter?
