We just have two right now. Ours are Saanen/alpine crosses. We've never had goats before, so it's a learning process for us at the moment!

That sounds like fun to me!! My hubs is shaking his head haha!! Someday hell come home to a big surprise :P so how much milk do you get per day approx?? (got to start plannin ya know)

So funny, that so many women's animal collections have to have the thumbs up from our men before growing! I just got done using my birthday as an excuse to beg mine into letting me have a couple bantam silkies to hopefully help hatch quail eggs.. And of course to hold, and stuff full of treats when they arnt occupied on nests, lol. Anyone sell silky eggs near Sidney Iowa? Geuss it doesnt have to be silkies, just small, and likely to become broody. =). Hoping for 6 to 12 eggs? I hate to order from far away. The hatch rate is sk much lower.

That's funny. After two years of talking, ordering books, and just leaving nice "hints", my hubby has finally given the OK to start planning our goat pen/area.

I'm very excited! I want to get two Nigerian dwarfs, but may have trouble finding them, and someone to breed them w/every year. So may have to go w/a larger breed. If I have to go larger, I'd prefer a Saanen. But we're on a chicken thread, so. . .

We're in Clinton, IA and I can't wait for the fall Maquoketa swap to see what's there. It'll be our first year going to a swap. I have lots of chickens in may breeds. I'm actually in the process of weeding out my current flock of sex links, australorpes, ameraucanas, wyandottes, barred rocks, rhode island reds, and some mixed breeds. We are going to have a DP flock consisting of Dark Cornish, and Light Brahmas. Next year I'll add some Speckled Sussex, and maybe one other DP breed. I'm tired of the Cornish X for meat and want to hatch and raise my own. My new chickies are almost 8 weeks old and are getting SO big, we're very excited about this new adventure! Plus I have two silkies for setting if I get a season where the larger birds don't want to set.

Craigslist seems to be a good place to find goats. Also there are groups on Facebook. Our Benton County livestock group has goats of many varieties.

We get around a gallon between both goats. They only milk once a day. I found our goats through the spokesman. We have a exotic animal swap that used to be in Waverly but has now moved to the the antique acres ground by cedar falls. They should have a swap at the end of September.
