I have a question for everyone. What do you charge for your chickens? I'm curious if I'm too cheap on mine or too high. Prices for purebred chicks, one year old hens(welsummers etc. not the sex links) and started chicks?
If I ever need to sale something I mostly sale at auction so I don't have much experience with chick sales. I think $3 a chick is pretty much the average going rate though. Rare breeds can be more per chick. One of the hatcheries at the swap Sat had lots for $1 a chick but those were the heavy breed cockerals and I don't think he sold out on them.
It depends on the quality, breeding, popularity... My SLW's are production bred, not show quality, so I will wheel and deal with them.
I usually hatch chicks and sell them for $2.50 each for my silvers. I sold 2 4 wk old chix this past weekend for $1 each, but their lacing was not good. The trio of pullets and 1 cockeral I sold at Maquoketa went for $20, I wasn't going to deal in them as they are almost laying age. I kept back a couple of hens from that same clutch with much better lacing and would sell them for no less than $25 each as I'm trying to improve my lines.
My Goldens are higher quality so I'm pretty firm on the prices. They sell for much more. I sell those chicks for $4.50 each, pullets will be $25-$40 each, cockerals less, depending on how many I have and how badly I want them to sell.
I will have, eventually, EE's, BBS Amaracauna's, BBS Cochins (some show quality birds in that flock), Cuckoo Marans, BBS silkies and haven't decided on pricing yet.
Thanks. Just when I thought I wouldn't sell them I have almost all the hens I decided to sell sold. I have sold the yr old ones for $8.00. I have sold chicks for 2.00. A lot of people around here want them sexed. Next weekend is the Burlington Swap. I'm going to have to go to sell the extra chicks I will have from my Cackle order.

What breeds do you have from Cackle? I really want some BB Red Phoenix for my Phoenix roo. We might order from Cackle later. But i bet they are sold out already cause I waited so long.
I really hope this Burlington is a ton better than the last one. I know it will be
I had one lamb born yesterday
He is an adorable little Jacob ram. I am gonna have to take photos later today and am keeping a close eye on all the other ewes who are thinking of lambing.

I ordered amerucaunas(easter eggers) and 50 heavy breed layers(they choose). Of all my hens the easter eggers lay the best. I ordered these back in Feb. I will not get them until May 1st. That is the longest I ever had to wait. Last year it would only be three weeks. I did order turkeys with the hens so maybe that had something to do with my longer wait(10 weeks).

Hatcheries are selling out this year like never before. I truely think the Government is scaring people into trying to sustain themselves on their own.
I have 1 "Ameracauna" from Cackle, she's such a faithful layer. She lays a dark brown egg though. Oh well. I love her to pieces. I got her from Cathy (Wyanluv), her name's Blondie.

I think that is def. part of it. Seems everyone wants to raise chickens. If I can't get any BB Red Phoenix this year I'll wait until next year. It's not like I really need anymore chickens LOL I just wanted a few hens so my roo can breed pure. I can find all but his color wouldn't ya know? Right now he is just producing very pretty mutts
for my layer flock.
One of my EE lays a white egg but I don't mind. I love her personality and pretty blue color. The rest of my EE lay various shades of green and a pink. I can't wait until my blue eggers (black Ameracauna) are grown up and laying.
Sad day... I went out of town for a couple days (writing this from WI) and one of my pooches had seperation anxiety and took it out on a few of my girls. Otherwise she's been completely fine around the birds when I let them out to free-range. My fiance doesn't know the flock like I do so doesn't know who got munched, but apparently I'm a few chickens fewer now. Sad...
On a lighter note...who's going to Burlington this weekend? What will you be selling?
