Hi all,
Reporting in from Mechanicsville area.
Have quite a collection of poultry on the farm, approx. 60 muscovy ducks, 10 geese - collection of 35 baby ducks, geese and chicks from a local school room project. Also approx. 500 white and brown bovan egg layers of various ages. Anyone looking for 1 - 1 1/2 year old hens let me know I have to cut back and make room for pullets. Good pricing on 50 or more birds.

grrrr.... county fair changed the classes for this year's fair and the birds we have don't work

anyone have birds they need to re-home?
the wish list (but anything will work, we are so up creek without a paddle here this year, to make it worst - its the last year my son is showing, he graduates next year and doesn't want to be committed to fair if he gets the chance to go to college stuff early)

- pair of frizzles or frizzled turken rooster (black) any age
- any fancy rooster & hen over 1 year (millie fleur preferably - our polish have too much white in their feathers since their last molt)
- trio of white egg layers over 20 weeks old (ours are going to be 16 wks which was the last years requirement )
- pair of ducks
- trio of quail

PM me with what you want to sell them for and where you are at
THANKS!!

Anyone make it to Kalona yesterday? How much do chickens sell for there? I would have really liked to take my pullets up, but not sure if it is worth the drive.

I was there. It really depends. Some birds were just $1 a head and others went for $15+ a head (chickens). Ducks varied greatly also. A pair of calls went for $40 a head but then there were barnyard ducklings that went for $3 a head while another lot of the same type of ducklings went for $10 a head. Peafowl were $60-$100 a head. Buffalo varied greatly also. I did not see how much the zebra or alpacas went for. A parrot went for $400. They should have the sale report up on their website soon so you can look it over. We left before they sale was over because we were tired.

We had a coachin go broody a week ago, so we gave her a bakers dozen to sit on. Should we candle these eggs, if so when, or is it necessary with a broody ?? Or maybe i should go to the hatching page, but thought i would ask here at home, (in Iowa) first !

Hi Iowans. I wanted to share an occurance with you. some of you may remember me from the IA City show last fall.
Two weeks ago, we got a letter from the city saying we had to appear before the city council and have their written consent to keep our birds. it was a tough week, waiting for the next meeting. i was asked to submit a letter answering some questions. at the end of a long, often silent, half hour discussion in front of the council, were were allowed to keep our birds. the only stipulations are: a one year monitoring period for complaints and i have to pen them by the end of the month.
this has ended on a positive note for us. if any of you living in town might be facing the same dilema, i will give you a copy of the letter that you may use as reference.
i still believe in city government! and the power of the truth. it did however turn us into minor local celebs for a few days until it died down.
