My DIL asked how to go about finding a few (less than 5) chickens that are at the point of lay and I didn't know what to tell her. I tend to be suspicious of someone rehoming chickens right before they lay for fear there is something they aren't telling me. Any suggestions? She had a very disappointing experience last year losing all of her chickens to Mareks at 6-8 months. They were purchased as juveniles from a reputable Iowa hatchery and were supposedly vaccinated, which I know is no guarantee. I think she wants to avoid another heartbreak.

I usually look on Craigslist. It's a good place to find people selling chickens. I can't help much but it's good to look at how they keep their chickens...are they cooped up in a tiny shed?...do they get ventilation?...and look at the condition of the hens themselves. When I buy chickens I do always check around their vents and under their wings for mites.

Not sure how you could tell whether they have a maraks disease or not...

It is a good idea for her to get chickens over 8 months though if she's already had the disease because I think it's supposed to last in the coop for years.

Yes, that was another concern, that and her yard. They had only been in their new coop a couple of weeks - I don't know if that will make a huge difference but there wouldn't have been enough time to build up much dander in the coop. They did have free run of the yard though when she was outside. I had let them use my small Omlet until they got the coop built. So, I guess I won't be using that for my broodies any longer. It's just a sad situation all around.
