IA here

Just a note to those of you close to the N.E. part of the State.
There is an APA, ABA show in Richland Center, WI on the 5th of June. It is a one day only show that should have close to 800-1000 exhibits for judging and there will be outside and inside sales as well.
WI, is very proper and cautious with their poultry laws and please check what you may bring into the State. I know for example; there are no turkeys allowed in the show. I do not know if that means they will not be for sale outside? All entrants must present their P/T results which have been done in the last 3 months, to have your birds entered in the show, or for sale. Or, your NPIP certificate.
My wife and I are making the long trip over to see how we can place in WI! This is the area where Frank LLoyd Wrights "House on the Rock", is and many other attractions.
There are room for late entrants if you wish to show but the fee is higher than normal for late entries. I was told by a Judge, that it is a very quaint, nice show, well run in an exceptionally clean environmet. Just hope the weather holds!

My kid has had the most awesome hatch for his first 4-H project. He incubated 11 eggs, BCMs and Welsummers, had 2 infertile, 2 Marans die in-egg because they were too huge to turn/pip, and 7 healthy chicks. So is that 78% hatch rate? I don't believe I've accomplished more than a 50 or 60% hatch personally. He's taken lots of photos for his project board and I'm hopeful that he'll win a ribbon of some sort. From now on, I think we will be more apt to "help" the marans hatch rather just leaving them alone as the chicks were big and fully formed.
Also - I tried Ivermectin pour-on last weekend for the first time. Everyone lived-- whew. Also, everyone looks much better already. I'm impressed.

What were you using the Ivermectin for?
Congrats to your son on his great hatch! I agree that the maran chicks get very large- I always have a couple die full term.

Is Stubby still around?

Almost the entire flock had lice. Not sure who started it, but whomever, it's been a pain. I researched and read all of the "oh don't do this" threads with regard to Ivermectin for bug control. I was close to choosing injectible but decided to go with pour-on with an eyedropper. It's been 4 days, and the flock looks so much better already. Last night couldn't find any adult bugs on Dolly (my test candidate who will hold still and do anything for a raisin) but still some eggs on the feather shaft. It's supposed to kill all the bugs, mites, lice, whatever, and is supposed to last 6 weeks. My process was to paint a toenail with red polish when they were treated, and I have 'stylin-chickens with pedicures' today.
Here was my formula in case anyone is interested:
5 weeks old chicks: 1 drop
bantams: 3 drops
full sized hens 5 drops
full sized roosters 6 drops

Stubby! yes, she's around but she looks pretty bad right now. I'd hate for you to see her because she's pretty bald. It's the bugs and the roosters. For awhile I put her in with the new chicks, but she hated it. She wants to be a big chicken and she has big chicken attitude. No one gets into a nest box without her approval, despite her small size.
We've had lots of fox trouble which my husband put to a stop last night after weeks of trying. We are hoping that it was alone.
And Steph, I have new ducks that you simply would love. They're part pekin and part swede and they look like someone dropped ink on them.

Mike had to make Stubby a little turtleneck vest last year because the roosters pulled so many feathers. Couldn't keep an apron on her, she would roll and run until it came off. I still have her two sisters and they have the same attitude, especially when it comes to their chicks. NO ONE comes near their nest or chicks and all the big girls have learned to respect that. I have even seen the two of them square off against each other to a bloody end. It is always over chicks, they sleep together when they aren't broody

Hi everyone in Iowa, I live north of Vinton raising 15 chickens,1 duck, now 4 horses (thanks to my wife bringing home another) 3 dogs, 3 cats, all of this while trying to be a good husband and a great father to my 16mnth son. Anyone near Vinton or Cedar rapids know where I can find a good new Pekin or some sort of duck to replace our favorite that got taken by a coon the other night. also looking for a Delaware hen.

I'm kind of close to you. I live in Troy Mills. I have Pekin eggs right now under a broody. They should be hatched out soon. Let me know if you are interested.
