I meant to post this earlier but didn't hit "submit". We have discovered the hard way who the main chicken killing culprit is. It is a hawk. He got my darling EE baby roo today. He has developed a new tatic, since the birds are all too big to pick up, he is just killing them in the yard and eating them there

I went outside earlier and all the chickens were hiding and panicked. Big Blu was definately taking control of the situation. I am guessing that the EE was trying to protect his little group of young girls when he got pegged.

The hawk was still tearing into him when I came around the corner of the garage.

He came back later to try and get the rest of his meal. Told Mike we HAVE to build them a covered run this spring. Now that the hawk has found his drive -up diner, I doubt he is going to quit.

Sorry that you lost your bird.
At least you know what is getting them now and can prevent from losing any. I know Jerrit used netting on where he kept his birds..might be the same as what sammileah suggested.

Their run unfortunately is 1/2 my backyard. So limited free range. Can't really cover the whole back yard, so I will be looking for a used dog run to make into a suitable enclosure for them.
I wish I could leave my newfie mix out there to protect them, but her mix is with springer spaniel so that bird prey drive is there. She would just end up killing them herself "chasing" them.
