Chicken math is so real. What are you going to do with your cockerels that hatch? It's so hard not to want to fill it immediately, lol. I definitely see the advantages of having multiple age groups though. We have two age groups in our laying pen, December hatches from last year, and March/April hatches from this year. I know, bless her heart. I feel terrible for the Orpingtons when it's 90+ anyway, I just couldn't let her try to actually brood. She'll won't be a year until December, she's actually my first to try to go broody. These are going into separate pens, so we'll have 3 total. One for my laying hens (20+1 rooster), one for LF breeding, and one for Bantams because they make me super happy.
Aww, poor girl! I hope it cools off so she can give it a go. Has she hatched for you before?
If my 6 hatch, that will put me at 17 chicks, in three age groups. I may have to build some larger brooders, since the daily rain has kept me from putting up the fences and starting on the coop, lol. Once the coop is done I'll have room for 20 total. I keep reminding myself that I don't HAVE to have 20 immediately, lol.
Too late! I already ordered them! She is on the ball too, she shipped them already!
So tiny and adorable!
