Haha tell that to my cat. We spend about $45 a month on feeding her alone. Just the 1... She goes through a 8 lb bag of Wellness Core every two weeks at $22 a bag.
We feed out farm dog cheap (purina dog chow) because he runs loose with the two neighbor's dogs. They used to all eat here sometimes, across the street sometimes and next door sometimes. I think now the neighbors got wise to it and I am the only one who feeds them at all. I don't think either one of them really want their dogs. But they are friends with our boy, so I let it go. Three big dogs just eat too much to feed anything more expensive. A 40 lb bag lasts about a week and a half and that is already almost $20. All three are a bit thin even at that, but I can't feed the whole neighborhood. I could bring him inside and feed him a better food but then I would feel bad for him. He loves to be outside with his friends.
Now the inside puppy...we haven't decided what we are putting her on yet (she is coming home this weekend). I have been researching it and haven't decided. Eventually I will probably be feeding her Wellness Core because that is what the cat gets and she does so well on it. I wish I could find a local dealer for Orijen but I can't. A lot of brands have large breed puppy forumla, but I don't see too many with small breed puppy forumla. I told my husband I want to feed her raw but he is not convinced. Told him that they cat could benefit from it too, but it does seem like a lot of work.
I would have to agree with those who are saying to just feed the best you can afford and that even a lower quailty of food is better than no food. You do what you can. My Aussie lived for 14 years on Kibbles and Bits, Purina Dog Chow, and Gravy Train. This was before I had a clue that all dog foods were not equal.
