IBW...with Pics!

Those Ameraucanas are always the first out of the gate. The Blue Orps seem to take their time, but they're usually all pipped or hatched by the end of Day 21. I've had them finishing up at the beginning of Day 22-those are just so huge usually, maybe that's why they take so long getting out, who knows? They're just slowpokes.

Oh no, I wasn't worried at all that they were taking long...technically, day 20 doesn't even start until 3pm today. With 19 eggs in the hatcher, I was kind of worried about having a slew of them hatching at the same time, and playing bumper cars with the rest of the eggs. So, while I was mulling that over, it popped into my head that I thought I remembered you mentioning something about the Blue babies taking their time during the Chic Cam discussion. Sooooo, in all honestly, I was kind of hoping they would be a little later, because a slightly staggered hatch would be a bit easier to deal with.

At the very least, if a bunch do come at the same time, we can just blame Lisa...
That @#$% Lisa with her fertile eggs!

..er, you wouldn't happen to have of few of those fertile eggs in Silky and Frizzle flavor right around Feb 11, would you, Lisa??

At 2:30 (19 days, 23 hours, 30 mins) a little BR kicked his soggy bum out of the shell. Once he's fuzzy, I'll update with pics.

HooRay!! Way to go!! Great job incubating!!
You know, a lot of my eggs have a tendency to hatch early. I used to think my bator temps were high, but they hatch early under broody hens and way over yonder, too.
I don't have anything on the calender for 2/11 yet, how many do you want?

Lisa

Oh groovy...can I get 3 each of the Silkies and Frizzles? I've been telling myself that "No, I've made my poultry plans for this year, and I have to stick with it.", but you know what this board does to people. I figure if I "go astray" with only 6 eggs, that's not really cheating, right?

oh yeah...zip is 57013

Oh geez...in the time I was downstairs doing catch-up housework and posting here (not an hour!) another BR has pipped and zipped. I'm up here with the laptop....waiting!

Sounds like you've got a great hatch going, April!!! The pics of your lab with your chicks really makes me miss my old girl!!! My new dogs think chickens are for eating!!!

Best of luck with the rest of your little pippers!!!!

Number 2!!!! He hatched at the small end...go figure! Again, another strong lil' bugger!!

Lisa or Cyn, what's the thing about leg color and sex? One of the BRs has black legs, and the other has pink...who's who?

Yeah, I worried about that the first time I took Emma out to meet the chooks a few years back. This was the dog that would stalk the sparrows at the bird feeders as a pup! lol! But, I took her out with me every time I'd tend to that very first batch of chicks, and later, to the coop. At first, I'd park myself on a folding chair, and let just Emma do her thing. Anytime she started showing too much interest in the birds, I'd just give her a low and serious "Emma, noooooo". I sat with her like this a couple of times, for a bout 30 mins at a time, and that was all it took. At the old farm, Emma was primarily an outside dog (she was terrified of the old hardwood floors thoughout the house...

), and not only would she not disturb the birds, but she'd break up fights, and tree any hapless racoon that thought he'd get a quick and easy meal. I'm really lucky to have such a clever girl...she gives the "b" word a good name!

If there is a black wash of color down the front of the legs of a BR chick, you most likely have a pullet. No black, a cockerel. IN GENERAL. You have to combine that with the headspot size and outline and the barring for a real diagnosis on them. And you can't really tell on the headspot till they are fully fluffy.

Let's see here.....

Ok, one has black legs and no white on it's head, and the other two have pink legs, and a little bit of white on their heads...1 pullet and 2 cockerals maybe?
