Icelandic Chickens

We have 2 more pips!!! OMG, we're so excited!

So, its kinda a common thing for this breed to hatch a bit early? How often does it happen to you?

I am negotiating with my daughter to get her to find her camera (might take a while since her room should be cordoned off as a Bio-Hazard area) so I can take pics to upload.

I will take pics with my cell phone, it takes nice pics, but I dont have the cable to hook it to my computer, and I have ZERO idea how to email pics to myself from my phone to get them online. I am kinda tech-tarded.

Anyone have a cell I could send pics to (who knows how to get them online after recieving) just in case we cant find DD's camera? PM if you dont mind me sending pics. Thanks!!

I have had some hatch early in the same batch that has ones hatch late. Go figure. Maybe it's the size of the egg and the proximity to the heating element in the incubator. One of my broodies hatched hers out the day before the other two. She is an Ameraucana and the others were silkies. Ay any rate, they wanna get out and get their picture taken!

Svarthöna :

I do not have Icelandics, but I have a colourful landrace flock and I'd never ever trade it for a flock where all chickens look the same.

And while I'm writing anyways, I have not seen that mentioned in this thread, but does anyone know if the Icelandics have down feathers attacked to their body-feathers, like the Hedemora chickens do?

Hi Everyone!

I was watching for an answer to this question but haven't seen one. I was out cleaning and relocating for winter and I collected some feathers from my Icelandics. The only feathers from Audun (my roo that looks like his dad Isi) are hackle feathers and I didn't see a "down feather" but a hackle is not a body feather so I looked at the ones from Asta, Anna and Ari that were body feathers and sure enough there was a smaller feather attached to the larger one. Never would have noticed this if Svarthona had not asked. I was very excited and then looked at some of my Silver Laced Wyandotte feathers that I had kept previously and some of them also had a smaller feather attached near the base just like the Icelandics. I don't know if what I'm seeing is a "down feather" but I will be looking for info on this............very interesting.

Of the six we had in lockdown, we had 4 hatch! We got 3 blondies and 1 dark one that has red and blonde high lights. One of the blondies has a few black spots on her back, Sooooo cute!! Will be taking pics and sending them to be posted by another BYCer who has graciously offered to post them for me! YAY!!!

Dont know what happened to the other two- they were fully formed upon eggtopsy, they werent shrink wrapped, and I had no temp or humidity issues, so ????

Lets all hope we got 3 hens and 1 roo

I read through all of the latest posts hoping for chic pics and nothing yet.

Will tune in tomorrow.

I'm going to have to let go of my polish so I can have Icelandics.

That will be ironic won't it? Icelandics in Phoenix?

As a punishment for the new Icelandic Moms not posting pictures, I am going to make us all look at more pictures of mine. Mind you, these little ones are two weeks old, not exactly at the "cute" stage.

Here we go:

"Attica, Attica!"

"Stop looking at me." "No, you stop looking at me!"

"I'm roosting!"

34566_punishment_1_of_1-3.jpg

"Me too, but I look cuter."

34566_punishment_1_of_1-4.jpg

"Sheesh, dumb blondes, look how cute I look."

"There's the Big Hand, where's the mealworms?"

34566_punishment_1_of_1-7.jpg

"What if I drop a load right now?"

34566_punishment_1_of_1-8.jpg

"Maybe I'll take a nap in the Big Hand."

34566_punishment_1_of_1-9.jpg

"What, still no mealworms?"

34566_punishment_1_of_1-10.jpg

"We're just gonna go stand in the corner until we get some mealworms."

34566_punishment_1_of_1.jpg

"Mealworms!"

34566_punishment_1_of_1-11.jpg

"Thank you Big Hand."
