Icelandic Chickens

Who's the Admissions Director around here? I'm interested in acquiring some Icelandic hatching eggs.

I have a fledgling farm & sanctuary and I donate all my white eggs to charity. Currently, these come from White Leghorns, but I need a few more in order to reach my goal of 10% and the Icelandics would be perfect because they fit into both categories, "farm" and "sanctuary". img/smilies/smile.png" alt="smile" />">http://www.facebook.com/GrownWithLove

They go broody all the time. I don't think they would be a reliable source for eggs. Due to the limited census of these birds (around 3,000 in the WORLD), we really need to continue hatching all the eggs we can.

STOP that!

Remember, they are very fragile. I have seen too many posts where people drop them (terrible accidents) Also, bacteria from just touching them can also jeopardize them. And ...... OK, I will quit.

Really though ..... Good luck on your hatch!

Ok, ok... (head down, slinking to my room) I'll let them be.

Thanks for the luck! I cant wait, we are all super excited! This is the perfect reason to buy a new camera AND to hatch more eggs (conservation effort) My daughter and I were looking at all the pics on this thread, and I have never seen her so enthusiastic over our chickens. I think her personal breed is gonna be Icelandics. She said shes keeping them all, even if everyone is a roo!! Ok with me, they are all soooo beautiful.

I am glad to see you are able to keep your Icelandics Kathy

I am nervously waiting for the results of a hatch going on since yesterday in Texas. I sent 12 of my Icelandic eggs and as of yesterday two had hatched. I am curious about the fertility rate since these were some of the very earliest pullet eggs.

I candled again last night, and eight out of eight eggs are looking perfect! Moving all around, developmentally on track, and so on! I'm so excited!

Had some great views of the fetuses moving last night, it was quite fun.

Just got some news from the Texas hatch in progress. These are eggs from my first generation pullets from the original birds, Henna, Lukka, Isi, and Orri that Sigrid and Sveinn sent me. Any that I share from this point on could also come from the original Lyle Behl line as my first pullet from that group is laying now as well.

Here is what Andy wrote in his email:

So far I have two whites, two dark blacks, one like the one to the far left (he is referring to a picture of my lastest hatch) but when I went to church he was sleeping, when I got home the other chicks had picked his belly till it was bleeding terribly, I have that chick in its own separate box now. Its still alive but weaker. I see one more pipping so we will see! Its so exciting and I cannot thank you enough!
Just got a final tally from Andy in Texas:

Final tally

3 infertile
2 developed halfway
7 hatched

so only 1/4 were infertile!
