Icelandic Chickens

All in the same pen? Take the girls out of there, if you do.

If you only have 3 girls, maybe you should cut down to only 2 cockerels, and switch them in and out of the pen (only one boy at a time for the 3 girls). Anyway, that's what I would do. I would not keep that many extra boys around. Toooooo expensive. Are you against butchering them? They taste like chicken ya know.

Yeah, right..... that's what I would do. (Did you see my picture?) hahahaha! OK, OK, OK, really, I AM gonna cull down in that rooster pen!

When Hillbilly Hen's Icelandics start laying again, I will hatch them and keep all the pullets, and the roos might go to freezer camp. However the ones that I have now, I will not eat them for I have driven and paid a bit for them. I hope to sell the extra roos to cover the cost of getting them and feed. No money in my pockets and the bank.

Gas is crazy high, and I drive about 50 miles a day to work, and my wages barely covers the gas.

I have been thinking of finding a job closer, and more hours. I will really look for another job after my coop is ready to handle the snow that will come soon.

Two Icelandic roos fighting through the wire. He is the only one that has blue coloring, and really like him, so he is the keeper for me.

This calf is the one that I helped pulled out. His pen is right next to the Icelandic pen. Love him.

My dad wants to raise 2 steers, so my dad brought the one that I helped, we are waiting for number 2 to be born. I named him November, for he was born in November and a week after my birthday.

Ok, Jack and Diane were gone this morning when I got up. Found them at the neighbors' visiting with a sheep and lamb that kidded overnight. Someone (Diana) was probably pulling on the bungee cord holding the gate closed. Tied Diana to the back of the Polaris and drove her home with Jack following until he went psycho and ran back to the neighbor's. Had to take apart a section of fence to let him back in. Oh, and Michael fell from the top stair all the way to the bottom hurrying to help me. Helluva rug burn.

This afternoon my neighbor Nikki called to say her cat attacked one of her chickens and could I come down and help. I made a chicken house call. The chicken is in bad shape. Probably a neck injury from being shaken. I was sure it was going to die in my arms while I held it for Nikki when she went to get a syringe. When she came back into the room the chicken tried to stand in my lap. Next thing I know Nikki is grabbing me in an area one woman shouldn't grab another. She's got a shocked look on her face when she comes out with an egg! The dying chicken stood up long enough to lay an egg in my lap! We looked at each other and busted up laughing. Poor chicken probably thought we were insensitive but it was funnier than heck! Last I heard the chicken was in a crate alive but barely. I gave Nikki some Pedialyte and an aspirin for the chicken and came home.

After dark Michael and I rounded up some birds headed for a new home tomorrow. Michael was driving up from the barn to the house on the Polaris. He thought I was running alongside and was talking to me. He about died when he stopped and realized it was Louis!

Louis can be seen here annoying a 2,500 pound Percheron draft horse belonging to Nikki! More beauty than brains!

Nikki and Buck. Would you annoy this guy? He is one of a pair of brothers. He's the little one!
