Icelandic Chickens

A Day Early Again!

These little bundles are due to hatch today but when I went to bed last night two were out and dried off and one was one the way. Here's what I found this morning. Of course they weren't lined up like this on my mousepad!

I was so excited to see this one. A redhead with the chipmunk pattern!

A fifth just hatched and it looks dark! Yeah!

What?!? I just NOW find this thread?? These are beautiful and so fascinating! I had no idea they existed until now! I know I'm late on this heh, but GREAT THREAD!!

I received 16 beautifully packaged Icelandic eggs yesterday afternoon. They spent the night resting and are about to be started in the incubator. I am so excited to be a part of your preservation efforts! Thank you so much for letting me be a part of this journey, I am honored.

I will give you an update at the first candle.

I got a bit backlogged, so sorry for the lack of pictures! Four of the five Icelandic babies I hatched are doing well. The fifth had something quite wrong with her and passed away when she was a few days old--she had been cocking her head strangely all the time and drinking, but not eating at all.

One of the chicks is undersized, just a tad bigger than my serama chick who is in with them, but it's eating well and energetic so I'm hoping it continues growing and doing well. It does get a little pasty butt sometimes but otherwise seems healthy. The other three are big and vigorous! One is black with yellow under its chin, one is white with a few small black spots, and the third is yellow with white feathers coming in.

They're quite a bit bigger than this now, of course, being almost two weeks old. I need to take some updated pictures as soon as I get a chance!

(The lightly striped chick is a serama.)

They're quite friendly and lovely little birds! They live in my room for now in their large storage tub brooder.

Mary, I owe you a donation and hopefully a visit to see your flock sometime!

One of mine was smaller also. However, now you would never know it. He is the same size as the others.

Glad to hear that! I've had runty chicks in the past who pulled through and were completely fine, and ones who had failure to thrive and eventually passed away. This one seems pretty vigorous so far so I'm hoping!

withcristi I am glad the eggs arrived in good condition. Keep us posted. I hope the fertility rate has improved.

silverphoenix, I am sorry you lost one. That is always hard. Sometimes the twisting neck is wry neck and you can give them some vitamins to try and help. I have only had that happen once and the polyvisol without iron did not help. I don't think it was an Icelandic but my memory is not good. I have had tiny ones in the last two hatches. I think it may have to do with the girls being pullets. My little ones have done well so far and after a bit I can't remember who the runt was. Hopefully yours will happen that way too. Thanks for the pictures. I can never get enough!

Mary

Our 3 lil babies will be 5 months old on December 5th. So I will be anxiously waiting to see some eggs anytime. Maybe a Christmas present? lol

Am hoping for good fertility by February and then I just have to convince a silkie to go broody.
